Super skittish Armatus.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The armatus seems to only swim franticlly at the glass when I'm near it. it doesn really run into the tank in great speeds. It just rubs and bumps it's nose nose against the glass as if it's trying to escape. I covered the tank with a black background and now it's all calm.

You sure you have enough room to house this fish????

I swaped out all my lights with LEDs or dim lights. It works for my payaras but thats just me.

Never had a skittish payara before, and I've raised scomb/tat/arm. Tank size and current I'm thinking. Try putting a small powerhead in there and see how it goes

my armatus is super calm when i have the black background. Thething is, once I take it off, it goes crazy again. I would try the powerhead but my armatus is bearly interested with my canister filter that gives a decent amount of current. I noticed that the curved part of the snout is rubbed slightly flat. don't know if it's normal.

What size tank is he in now? Any places for cover/hiding?

Hes in a 75 growout, so I assume in time he will be moved to a larger tank. If you can, maybe move him over to a larger tank sooner than later unless he'll be eaten by whatever is in the larger tank.

Seemed like it took my armatus a month before he was comfortable with the environment and the constant movement of a busy house. Hes always sitting just above middle of the tank towards the baxk corner (always facing the front) but has no issue comming to the front to say hi and mooch food.

Maybe try adding more decorations for cover, he might feel more secure. Although my tank is pretty sparce and he seems happy enough.

My tank is very sparse with little cover to hide, current stock includes 15 fish in a 300g, 4k gph of current in a spinning motion around the surface of tank, both my armatus right in the middle/front of the tank swimming with the pack. I know this is poor comparison but I recommend a powerhead/fan as it circulates flow within the water vs a filter return which drops a single flow in. Also how big is the room that your tanks in? Can be another factor

Ahhhh the joys of Payara.

I remember years back when we all thought we could keep them......

So has anyone ever got one up to around the size of Fang before dying for no reeason?
