If you are using foam under the tank, you should calculate the proper foam density. For an acrylic tank that has a full-contact bottom, you need VERY LOW DENSITY foam. The pink foam found at HD & Lowes is way too stiff; it would not compress at all, therefore offering no protection from an uneven or twisted stand.QUOTE]

I didn't used the pink foam I used the regular old white stuff. The foam did compress in a few areas more than others. I beleive this was due to leveling the stand which made it twist slightly, I think. I still can't figure that one out. The stand and tank are now as level as I can get them. The water level is off by 1/16 of an inch from one end to the other. The tank is up and running and has been for about 2 weeks. I've had zero problems with the tank or the stand. the only problems I've had are noise problems. I'm now on my 3rd set of stand pipes and have finally got the tank quiet. I don't think I can get it any quieter considering the amount of turn over this tank has. Here's a couple crappy pics of it set up and running.

That looks fantastic! Thats exactly the type of tank I would love to one day get my hands on. The rounded ends really make it stand out. It would make a great room divider! Have you thought about adding plants?

Thanks. As of now I have no intentions of putting any plants in. The fish will either dig them up or shred them or both.

I'm a bit worried that I don't see any diagonal bracing in the stand.

Living in California as I do I can't help but think of what'll happen when a quake hits and everything in the house gets a big shove to the side.

Maybe when you skin the stand you'll add some lateral support.

Otherwise all I can do is droole and wish I had the space for such a monster setup. :)

The stand is pretty solid, I'm not too worried about diagonal bracing. Earth quakes, what are those. The last earth quake where I live way almost 50 years ago.

Just curious I was thinking about building my own tank and it looks like if I read it correctly you built your's were and how much was the acrylic for the tank that you built. Beautiful tank

Thanks for the help, I'll do the plywood and the foam. Here's a actual picture of the stand and tank. It has been changed a little since the first design.

great craftmanship, check out the thred in the "general aquarium" forum titled "the most beautiful tank".

Theres no need for diagnal bracing if the outside of the stand is going to be skinned.
Very nice job by the way. That's going to be a fantastic display tank. when you pick up the foam for the tank base...get an extra sheet and cut it to fit that window. If you put it in and then close the drapes no one will notice...

Ya and I don't know how many tanks this large would stay up on regular stands or beefed up stands in the event of a quake that was large enough to make any tank fall...

Plus he is only keepign fronts in there so as long as the tank satys intact he can replace the fish for pretty cheap :D
