Finally saw them free swimming yesterday (6 days after pick up, 8 days after eggs). :nilly::nilly::nilly: Well, for a few minutes before they got picked up again.

Parents doing an excellent job. Dad even charged glass to try to scare me off :D

They are in a 55 all by themselves, which makes it very difficult to feed the fry. Will need to siphon them out (or strip them from the parents).

Any suggestions on how long I can leave them with the parents (without feeding the fry)?

If it were me, I wouldn't plan on removing them for 3-4 weeks. In another few days you'll be able to deliver food to the fry using an eye dropper without the parents collecting them. BUT, watching parental care is the main reason I am in the hobby. I look at it like this - watching them raise the fry is really enyoyable, where as, me raising the fry is not particularly fun ;)

It looks like you have 80-90 fry, an alternative would be to siphon out half in the next few days, and leave half with the parents. It is easy to siphon fry from orange heads, they always choose to attack the hose rather than pick up the fry if you move quickly.

Thanks Ed - I know I can always count on you for the excellent advice!

I'm keeping some balzanii fry with a female in a 6g "nursery" with a sponge filter, and feeding them baby brine shrimp from a jar. It's working out well - the balzanii fry are eating and I'm able to watch the female care for them. I completely agree with you - it's a lot of fun :)

I can set up a 10g with bare bottom and a sponge filter to keep the OH fry. It's probably too small for the parents as well, right? Or should I just leave them alone in the 55 with sand and a HOB filter? I guess I'm concerned if I'd be able to feed them properly - if the BBS sink to the bottom and get moved around a little bit, can they still find it?

Congrats man, hope it works out for you. I want some babies. I just got my first geo today and now I want some more, lol...

Thanks man. You are doomed - these guys are really addictive! ;)

Good luck with your new red hump. I don't have any experience with them but they look cool!
