Second pic could be a red-headed severum. Mine as a juvie (still is) had much of the same banding and red coloration (except now it's amuch darker "blue").

Good luck with the "poor man's" discus! Just Kidding ! I like Sevs also :headbang2

care to post a picture of your juvie?

Either way, I'm not complaining. The green severum, gold severum, super red, and 2 notatus are all beautiful and pretty even-tempered. Keeping them with acaras, oscar, firemouth, chocolate cichlid, bichirs, characins, and other cichlids. Only a fool would complain.

wait a minute - you actually think the second fish is a rotkeil?

Nope. Just think that I ended up with some little beauties. I've seen far too many mistakes and changes in classification to care about the rest. I have 4 different "kinds" of severums in the house, but they're all just severums to me.

I'm glad that you are fine with the fish but if you bought what was supposed to be a Notatus from a reputable breeder and paid good money along with shipping then you should notify them. That fish is definately a hybrid and the seller should at least know so that they will not purchase the fish from were they came from or fix what ever issues caused this mix up if they bred them in house.

Well, the other one (I bought two at the same time) looks pretty much like the notatus I was expecting. I'm not planning to breed them or sell them, so they'll just be pets. Here he is for comparison. He's actually got a lot of beautiful green on him that gets washed out from the flash on my camera.

My experience was similar. I purchased six F1 notatus @ 1" but one didn't make it through shipping. Of the five left, two are more "notatus-like" in appearance, two are very clearly more "rotkiel-like," and one is on the fence because his body is lightly colored but he shows no red on the neck or face like the rotkiel types. His spots and bars, however, are not as dark and prominent as the notatus-like ones.
