Switching from gravel to sand.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like having stuff delivered to my door. :D

That's the exact same stuff we're using in our 300 gallon tank, and will be using in our new 265 gallon tank. We did pay significantly less at a local Pool and Spa store than what is listed on Amazon, but it is well worth it. As long as you like the white/off white color, you are going to love the texture and uniformity of the grain size. We are using HTH brand (sold at Ace Hardware) PFS in our other tanks, and while being a more natural tan color, it is not nearly as soft as the Fairmount Santrol brand PFS Also, when I "gravel vac" the HTH sand every couple of water changes (because I use a fairly deep layer of sand), I get way more fine particles of sand that make their way into the siphon tube.

Cool. If I decide I need a 3rd bag, I'll try to pick up one locally. There are 28 community pools in my town, so we don't have pool stores. Looks like there is one about 20 minutes away though.

Defeats the main reason why the majority of people use pfs. I suppose depending on the circumstances, this may be worth the delivery fee, but for me, picking it up is of little effort. So, I'll gladly pocket that $40+ savings

To rinse new sand, I always do a major water change on one of my tanks, and siphon old water (not the mulm) into the bucket of sand, stir and dump outside. And repeat as needed, sometimes it gives me an 80% water change to get the sand water running clear, but I figure its a win win situation, cleaning the sand, and getting a serious water change at the same time.

Yea that would be preferable and a good idea But I live on a third floor loft style condo so I do all my washing at my companies shop and than tote it home.

Well quick update since I know everyone is on pins and needles lol. Got some pfs from a different pool supplier called light house pfs. Rinsed for like 5 minutes and was completely clean. Will be switching over tonight and posting a pic.
