I know it's too late but I wanted to post about something I saw on YouTube today. If you are going to completely drain the tank and move the residents to a temporary container, you can use a shop-vac to suck up the old substrate. Just thought I would share this in case some people that look up this thread in the future are able to temporarily relocate their fish and use this method.
