Switching from Hikari to NLS... what would you recommend?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well RD, as much as you try there will always be hot dog feeders around. I guess some people refuse to educate themselves or allow others to educate them. Anyways I switched to NLS and not only have I had coloration and healthy size, I have had great growth, and the food doesn't cloud the water if fed properly. I give thera+A 10/10 and you can check my threads to verify the growth of some of my fish.

All high end expensive flowerhorn food has high concentration of astanaxin ( excuse my spelling) red algie, i only mention fh food cause of the extreme cost for low quantity but extremely high carotine quantity, you can buy this red algie and add it to your food instead of buying the high cost stuff.

Fish food marketed for FH is no more high end than any other decent quality cichlid formula on the market, which all contain one or more forms of astaxanthin. Speaking of which, astaxanthin comes in many forms, some are natural forms, such as Haematococcus pluvialis (a micro-algae) and phaffia yeast, others are synthetic products, such as CAROPHYLL® Pink, which is also used in commercial aquaculture. (salmon farms, shrimp farms, etc) Most specialty FH is overpriced to the extreme. Even a low quality mediocre fish food can give great results in color, all one needs to do is add enough synthetic color enhancing agents. Color is only one part of the equation, and the color red is the easiest color to produce via enhancing agents. The tricky part is using enough to enhance a red fish, without turning a fish that is naturally yellow, orange.

muscle ........ As clockwork stated, there is a 4.5mm floating pellet (Jumbo Fish formula), also a 7.5mm floating pellet (Extra Large Fish formula), and a small 1mm semi-floating pellet. (Surface Feeder formula) I've fed all 3 formulas over the years to various cichlids, including FH. It's difficult to make a small floating pellet (under 3mm) without using a fair bit of starch in the food, which the owner of New Life refuses to do.

I'm still scratching my head over how a simple question about pellet sizes can end up turning into a 9 page discussion. lol

I'm just a master troll, I suppose.... jk. I laugh everytime I check this forum and see how big this has become.

Yes rd i agree, no disputing the facts..... Only mention the fh food in my previous post and also expressed my feeling on cost to deter unknowledgeable buyers. I think these fh food contain an extremely large amount of these red enducing agents. i mention color addatives in unision to all the additional food i feed my fish in my previous post were i give my opinion on nls vs hikari, not claiming color addatives are all you need. I comment your articulate well thought out and factual post but dont believe anything i previously posted was incorrect, although def not as informative as yours. If i am wrong im always willing to learn. I mention the red algie or micro algie as a source due to its easy obtainability. I really only use red addative for my male red dragon and sparingly due to the large variety of food i use. I have many alt foods not previously mentioned only cause i wanted to stick to pellets, although i did mention fd earyh worm.
In addition to my previos posts i currently have freeze dried mysis and freeze dried krill, and various frozen foods.

I mention the red algie or micro algie as a source due to its easy obtainability.

In Asia, most breeders/hobbyists, and many fish food producers use synthetic astaxanthin (CAROPHYLL® Pink) for red color enhancement, not micro-algae. Very common in the FH & discus biz in Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, etc, where maximizing color seems to be the ultimate goal, whether it is natural or not. FYI - the synthetic forms of astaxanthin are also FAR less costly then the natural forms.

More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astaxanthin

BTW - here's a past discussion that I was involved with that had to do with using Carophyll Pink to enhance fish.

Thanks for the link, i never read about this synthetic addative. Looking at pics from this other forum i see the simularity from the discuss in before after and the same effect in asian bred stock. I agree with you as far as using natural vs synthetic. You are quite informative.
