Silica is terrible for ray's, sharp edges, leaves little red bumps.
If I get pool filter sand, must be 100% quartz, because silica is bad for rays.
I am sure saying pool filter sand is too vague so I will try to explain a little better.
Pool filter sands and sand blasting sands are silica sands. I use these in various tanks with bottom dwellers and they love them. I havn't seen any marks on any other scaleless fish (pimelodus species for example) so I would think it wouldn't be a problem (since gr8karma uses it on his as well and so have others).
I use Mystic White pool filter sand. This might be the stuff from the back that they were talking about. It was about 10$ a bag I believe.
Quartz is the same thing as silica (silicon and oxygen). So...Yeah...Same thing
What you would want is a non abrasive sand (meaning one that is worn down be it silica, glass, quartz, any non buffering sand).
But pool filter sand isn't that sharp. Its not like glass sharp. Its just like any other sand. You could squeeze it in between your hands and have no fear of getting cut. You could let an infant roll around in it without any fear of having any baby lacerations. Basically what I am trying to say is it isn't that sharp.
Just try it. Its 10 dollars a bag, and I used one bag to cover my 55 and 75 about an inch on each (actually probably 2 inches deep on my 55).
Good luck!
I hope you are satisfied.
Cant wait for the tank to clear fully.
