Synbranchus marmoratus?

They will eat suprisingly large fish, especially at night, they have a habit of grabbing a fish and smashing it into the bottom until it dies. I am pretty sure that like other synbranhus eels they have many very small, very sharp teeth (small enough that they are hard to see even in large eels), their jaws are strong enough that an adult can "glove" an unwary finger, stripping the flest completely off the bone. They have been known to tear apart and eat dead chickens.

The locals keep telling me that they catch these eels by putting a finger in the water and when an eel sucks it in they just pull the finger with the eel out of the water. I've heard that many times in Buenos Aires. I doubt anybody would do that if the eels were "stripping the flesh completely off the bone". I do confess that I do not trust this method enough to try it myself but it does seem to be the way.

Rumblesushi, your description of a yourseff as a 5 foot 10, 135 lbs agressive Homo Sapiens specimen does not impress me as this species quite often grows bigger, heavier, stronger, a lot smarter and quite a bit more eloquent than that.

It's not supposed to impress you. I'm 147 btw, not 135. The point is not my size, it's that I know how to fight, and I like fighting.

Smarter and more eloquent? Sure, occasionally - but certainly not in your case :D

I know you are originally from Russia, but your command of English is laboured and mine is good, so don't be a hypocrite :)

I'll put something into perspective for you two mariquitas, who are obviously ignorant to fighting at a higher level than high school scraps.

Jorge Arce - at 5'6 and 112 pounds, would knock either of you out with the first punch he threw :D

And shekes your posts questioning my intelligence and eloquence are not surprising at all. The stupid are almost always ignorant to their intellectual shortcomings, as far as you're concerned you're probably the most intelligent person on here, when in fact you are as thick as 2 short planks :D

Richie is probably marginally more intelligent than you, just a bit of a twat.

A 2-3' one would probably be okay with full bodied fish like oscars.

That is the warning that goes with them on a couple reputable sites, they are talking about large adults, I have never had one that big, less than 30" for me, they were capable of crushing the shells of fresh water mussels and chomping through an 8" chub, I would not willingly stick my finger in one's mouth to test the statement.

Of course a chihuahua can do the same thing if you let it, or any fair sized turtle I am sure that a 2' pacu could do more damage with a bite.

really drdpc? You found them to be aggressive? Another member here shekes, and also Daniel Machado think they are not aggressive.

There seems to be conflicting opinions on whether they are just predatory, or aggressive too.

My swamp eel is not aggressive at all, but I got it when it was like a "worm fish", lokking like a brown big earthworm with 4". It grew with my fishes, and it's almost 2 years old. It eats meaty foods, as well as pelleted food, and has never bitten anyone. But I may be just lucky. AFAIK, some older specimens, caught big and grown-up, have already developed some predatory responses that are very difficut to deal with. My 0.02 ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

thanks for the info Daniel :)

Maybe I'll be in luck too then. Mine is 8", and it's already fattened up, not quite as worm like. I feed it bloodworms, sinking pellets, and mealworms. And sometimes bits of mussel.

How big is yours now after 2 years?

He dosn't look exactly like mine.
