Thanks Pretzelman .. yep that's my fish ... :) Too bad yours got beat up like that, its a shame that they can't regrow/heal their fins back to the way they were. But c'est la vie ... Anyhow thanks again for posting some pics for me.

update .... picked up my 55 gallon the other day. On a different thread starting to set it up .... so he'll be moved hopefully by the end of the week

I hope my synos like the limas I'm getting! They're good with my pictus so can't see why not! But he looks nice bro!

Well it happened again. The syno is in my 55 gallon, and I figured on trying a pleco again. Had gotten a good deal on 3 albino bristlenose plecos. 2 of them went into different tanks, and the largest one 3" went into my 55 gallon with the Ocellifer. Figured with the extra space things might work out and they did at first. We went away at the start of July for 5 days, when we came back I couldn't see the pleco anywhere. Thought it was hiding ... Did a good clean on the tank this weekend and looked everywhere, no trace. I've learnt my lesson ... my syno don't like plecos. When I got him with the 30 gallon, one of his tank mates was an 9-10" common pleco ... I understand his hatred.
I noticed at an LFS the syno ocellifer from the beginning of this thread is still there .... I think I'll probably go pick him up to add to my 55g. It's still pretty bare for tankmates and I'd like a second bottom dweller, besides after this much time maybe the store will give me a lesser price.

Confirm please: a 5" syno ocellifer ate whole a 3" pleco? I struggle to imagine this is possible. Synos mouths are small and they may kill a tank mate out of territorial aggression but not eat them, not swallow whole for sure.

What you are describing with the syno and its victim plecos I think is possible albeit never happened to me. Something needs to change - a larger tank, more hiding spots, dither tank mates, etc. It is not normal by any means for a syno to be killing its pleco tank mates.

The syno has its territory in my 55G and anything comes near its aggressive, as I was struggling on the learning curve the only constant with any pleco I tried died if the syno was in said tank. But before now there was always a body present. The syno's had a tough life, he was at least 4" when I got him with my first tank (30G) and he had a huge common pleco as one of the tank mates. The tank was free and the fish came with (4 or 5 tetras I believe as well ... been a few years), down the road he got moved to a 29G tall with a bunch of cichlids (before I joined this site and started to learn) Tried to add an albino bushynose pleco a few times, everytime it eventually died. Hadn't tried again, until recently. Wanted a couple for my banjo tank and my sons guppy tank.
It was a buy 3 deal ... so I threw the 3rd one (biggest) into my 55G, all tanks have driftwood. I was actually planning on removing him, but like I said. He's no where.
Whats currently in the tank, are 1 synodontis ocellifer (the boss), 2 african butterfly cichlids, 1 senegal bichir (who doesn't eat live food anymore ... otherwise the other fish would be gone like I had hoped/planned), 3 cherry barbs, 2 platys and now 3 ghost shrimp as of tonight. The African butterfly cichlids are slowly cleaning them up, used to be 20 ghost shrimp. The bichir hasn't touched a thing ... like I said he's unfortunately broken of live food.
Its only the pleco's that my syno seems to kill ... just this time no body. But I was gone for a few days, so anyone could've eaten the body.

IDK the size of your bichir. He is probably the only one capable of swallowing the pleco whole. The syno could never do it and you'd find the carcass. The pleco's head plus pectoral fin bones are quite wide and spiny.
