synodontis catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You sure it's not hiding? I've had those lil buggers hide for a year without so much as a glance. Go to pull out a rock and they stuck to the bottom lol. Other than that I agree that the bichir is the only fish capable. You might not feed it live food but it's def capable. :)

Checked the filters?

yup that happens also lol. I found goldfish in my fx5s that had to have been there at least a month back in the day. They were fat and healthy lol.

Had a bit of an algae problem develop so this past weekend I did thorough scrub down in the tank, moving objects and checked everywhere. Took both filters apart (AC70 x2) searched around the tank and stand ... no stone left unturned so to speak. The pleco is gone. I don't believe the syno ate it, I think he just killed it once again. The others I figured cleaned up the carcass either the senegal bichir or african butterfly cichlids. I very much doubt my bichir killed it, he won't eat live food anymore. I had up to 20 ghost shrimp with him at one point ... it was the addition of my 2 butterfly cichlids that started cleaning them up, plus the 3 cherry barbs and 2 platy's he hasn't eaten in 2 months. He wouldn't even eat the fry from the Platy's that were in the tank.
We left for 4 days at the end of June start of July. It was the last time I saw the pleco, haven't seen him since we got back. Then last week started to notice algae on all my tank walls .... so I cleaned the whole tank and searched. That's how I know he's gone, and not hiding. I've had the syno for 4 yrs now and its only plecos he kills, so far 4 to be precise. Wish I knew just how old it is ... it might explain its temperament.

what type of synodontis is it ? is it with any other fish ?

It's a synodontis ocellifer who is currently housed with 1 senegal bichir (about 6"), 2 african butterfly cichlids, 2 platy and 3 cherry barbs. They are currently in a 55G tank with 3 chunks of driftwood, a rock/slate stand, 3 anubias, 1 sword, 5 or 6 small watersprite and gravel with 2 AC70's for filtration. Thats the whole tank.
Now this syno has been housed with dojo loaches, banjo catfish, raphael catfish, other synos, african dwarf frogs, amano shrimp, orange mexican dwarf lobster, corydoras, tetras and cichlids (not all at once but over 3 yrs in a 30 gallon ... before I knew better). Never had a issue with it killing anything else. But I did lose 3 albino bristlenose plecos over those 3 yrs in the 30G. Thought I'd be safe with the 55G adding another albino bristlenose pleco once again ... turns out I was wrong. He shows aggression to anything that comes into his space and chases them away .... including my senegal bichir. Plus my 55G is way understocked ... I just won't try adding plecos anymore.
I wish I knew the history of my syno ... but he came with a 30G tank that also had a huge pleco in it 4 yrs ago. He was basically already his size when I got him. He's only been in the 55G for around 3 months. Now if this is abnormal behaviour .... I'm not surprised. My wife says that almost anything I do or get involved in is abnormal (including me).
