Can anyone help me identify my trio of catfish? They were sold to me as synodontis longirostris and I'm really just looking for some confirmation on that. I can't find a whole lot of info on that particular type of catfish. Any help would be appreciated!

Its extremely hard to tell with a head on shot. But lately these things have been popping up all over the place, and every single one has been a hybrid and not S. longirostris. Its hard to tell from your picutres a side view would be easy to tell.

Take a look at this thread, and see if your fish looks like these. These are all confirmed hybrids.

otherwise, get some good side shots, and we will be able to better identify your fish.

Thanks for the reply. After looking at the hybrid thread, I'm pretty sure that they are the same fish as the ones posted, especially since I also got them from petsmart. I'm normally pretty good with my fish id's, but I had never seen the catfish that came in...and about a week after I bought them the "max size" on the tag changed from 6 inches to 16 inches :(

I may have to shop for a new catfish home soon. Two of them have stayed small but one had quadrupled in size after only a couple months or so.

just for the record, here are some (bad) sideshots:

Sorry to burst your bubble. I wish mine was longirostris. Kinda why i bought the fish. I actually didnt get mine from Petsmart, got it from private lfs. but i think they are all coming from the same batch.

I would be more than willing to take these guys off your hands, if there was a way to do it.

oh and one more thing
thanks for the side shots, i agree with the hybrid id. Your fishs snout isnt long enough to be longirostris from my understanding of the fish.

ah, no worries. I wasn't looking to own a longirostris...rather, I just wanted some interesting catfish that my african's wouldn't beat up. In fact, I'm quite happy knowing that my catfish probably won't hit the 16 inch mark

yeah definately wont hit the 16" mark. Dont know exactly how big they will get cause this is the first time this hybrid has popped up, but probably around 7" to 10" somewhere around that

OMG!!!! I bought one the other day from petsmart, not knowinggggggg how big he would get. i tolddddd them i didn't want a big one. just one to mosey the grounds and eat leftovers. they said, oh 6 inches maximum. MAN i'm mad. he is BEAUTIFUL. SUPER high fin, big bold spots and stripes on the dorsal and tail. and his snout is long, there is no denying it. i've seen other posts from a year ago, on other sites where they bought the S. Longirostris from PetSmart and in a year they're at 6 inches already.
