Never seen synspilums like those, odd body shape and vertical bars.

Just what I was thinking. The top fish is definitely not a synspilum, and the bottom fish has synspilum traits but doesn't look pure to me.

looks hybrid.
niceee nice fish though.

I thought the same thing...I could see bifasciatus or bifasc/synsp hybrid. Besides, at the end of the post he said "not bad for a couple of $4 fish" which I take to mean he got them at an lfs. If that's the case then most likely they came from a fish farm somewhere and they're all known for their "red head" cichlid hybrids. I wouldn't trust anything from an lfs to be pure unless I knew who the supplier was and knew that they were a trusted source. That's not to say that you can't get very nice fish...not at all...the fish in original post are very nice but I don't believe them to be pure. :)

Well, that's an interesting debate. The first fish looks identical to the one in Axelrod's encyclopedia of fish. They were bought at two seperate pet stores. I'd be interested in finding out more about why you don't think they're synspilum.

Excellent fish. Love the colors. All that for 4 bucks. That is a bargain.

The top fish looks nothing like a synspilum. The colors are way off. Syn don't have that wavy iridescent color in the dorsal fin or the yellow on the back half. The black bar is also more pronounced than on synspilum.

The bottom fish looks more like a P. synspilum, but has some odd vertical barring, a more elongated shape, and too pronounced horizontal barring.

Post up some more photos of the mature fish to compare.

Here's my pure 9" female to compare with.

Another thing, I've seen full threads of synspilum pics where almost none of the fish have the same color patterns, so I'm not sure that color means everything.
