thank you for the help.I'm gonna go buy a t5 higlo I think its called for my tank tonight and start growing anything I can find.Except hogwart-what a crappy plant that is.It grew great with what I had but would break off and clog up my filters all the time.I actually ripped em all out and threw them outside.I've got some amazon sword and some others already that have been doing okay so far but my clown loaches are eating up the swords.I guess that was a bad idea putting them in that tank.Ill have to uproot em now and put them in my 40 gal tank and see how it goes.

the ground cover plant im using is Blyxa Japonica. as for the kelvin rating, anything between 6000 and 10,000k is good. i personally use 10,000k in my lights

Does the "K" add up or just more of it?

The K does not add up. You can think of that as the type of light. The watts is what is used to estimate the amount of light.

The "K" or Kelvin rating of the light is NOT a measure of it's brightness, it's the color temperature. If you want to get technical, white light is brighter than blue or yellow light (more lumens). Depending on the scale you look at, 6000-7000 is considered to be closest to daylight. Above that, the lighting becomes more blue and below that it becomes more yellow/red.
