they look more like my t. aureus then the t. ellioti to me or is it just because they are young?

nah that's an ellioti.

the one's I wouldn't say 100% for sure are pure ellioti are the OP's, and ohdannyboy's look similar to aureus I've seen. A lot of the problem is that ellioti have a lot of regional variants and they can have quite distinct differences in color.

T. affinis, T. meeki and T. pasionis have different body shape (mostly in the jaw and head area) than the other group, which is most often referred to as the Helleri group. :)

i will post a pic later on of my 'aureus' they look completely different to my 'ellioti'

ok so the first 2 pics are what i believe to be t.aureus and the 3rd is what i believe to be an t.ellioti as u can see there is a big difference in the fish, ive noticed to my 'aureus' can flare their throat similar to a meeki whereas the ellioti cannot do it quite as impressive..maybe i just have the 2 species mixed up but this is what they were sold to me as

I fed mainly hikari cichlid gold along with supplements like bloodworms and various other pellets and frozen/freezedried foods.

I had three of them for only a couple months before two paired off and started spawning. By the third spawn, I was ready and set up a fry tank to grow them out. They were doing well and grew to about 1/2" then suddenly within a matter of days, the fry tank crashed and my male died out of nowhere (went from colored up and swimming fine to dead in about 40 min.) leaving me with 2 females. I was pretty mad.

Here's my young male in breeding color

and the pair with eggs

That is what I feed mine. I am trying to figure out why mine is so dull in color. The water params are good, and the ph is close to 8. There aren't any other tank mates and can't find any causes of stress. Nice pair you had.

Thanks. There is about 10 different thorichthys, and there are a lot of varriations depending on where they are found. The coloration is different and they are found in different locations. The differences are mainly in colors and body shape.

So temperment doesn't vary between most thorichthys? Do they prefer groups or being solo and would they hold their own with vieja's?

It could just be bad genes. Usually tankmates bring out more color as fish fight for dominance.

...Bill

Yup that might be it. He seems very healthy other wise.

Temperment greatly varries in thorichthys but more on the individual fish then sp. In general I'd say they all can be very peaceul or very aggressive. My ellioti is less aggressive then my FM, but I have heard other people have had different experiences. They will only do fine in groups or with other cichlids in vey large tanks.
