most of mine have eaten with in a few days, in my experience there is little difference between sunfish i have caught on a hook and ones I have dip netted or seined (although i would not even consider trying to keep a fish in a tank that had a torn up mouth, i would probably eat it or give it a wack in the head and throw it on the bank)
people, people.. dont jump the gun here, anyone that fishes often enough has caught a fish that swallowed the hook. alot of the time the hook is past the esophagus (assuming fish have one). What are your options for this?
A. leave the hook, and cut the line as close as possible.
B. attempt to remove the hook delicatly (good luck if its that deep it aint gonna work)
C. rip the hook out.
D. kill the fish quickly (assuming he is gonna die, and you are making it quicker)
E. drop all your gear, leave the fish on the line, cover your eyes and run around screaming "oh my gd oh, my gd, oh my gd"
F. get a much larger hook, take a deep breath and stick it in your own lip (like steve-O) so you may feel the fishes pain and be at one with nature.

there are not too many options in this situation. he said he would prolly eat it, whats wrong with that???

oh...
hey how long did it take for them to start eating?
i have not seen any of the wild fish eat yet! but if they havnt eaten in a week they would look much worse. i managed to sneak up on them this morning, and see that they must be nocturnal, i was suprised. they seem to own the tank when its dark, all the cichlids hide and the perch/wtbass roam the tank. they must have been scrounging stuff to eat. the one that had the hook in his gills is doing just as good as his buddies that didnt have a hook in their gills!
