Taking home "fished" fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with the others, you really should seperate your guppies and your gills. Especially if you're concerned about their eating.

I currently have some small bluegills (the biggest being an inch) and they are eating cichlid pellets just fine.

I have always used barbed hooks (too many smart bluegill that take the bait of the hook) and the barbs slow the bgs down. I rarely ever have one swallow the hook (I also use a larger hook) and the damage to their lip is minimal.....just the same as if you pierced your lip.

separating them might be a hastle...i'm not too worried about them getting eaten..after all they are my "ornamental fish" i just like the bigger ones so...although i can probably net some big ones, haha

hmmm..i use a really small hook from southbend..i'll try to get the size.
it's called nightcrawler hook i think...for worm and minnows.

but i have 2 sizes..a tiny one, like those gold ones for trout fishing. and a little bigger one.. do you think the bigger one would fit in a 7incher's mouth?

The hook I usually use is a gold one, about as long as the tip of my thumb (I know not the brand and such, since they were in my future F-I-L's box) I've hooked 7 inchers on it (it's a little easier) and it discourages (USUALLY) the smaller gills. BUT, prepare to have your bait stolen a little more often.

I caught a bluegill on a half-inch bluegill minnow about a month ago. Now that it's getting colder here, the fishing isn't as good, b/c everything's moving out deep.

what's a FIL box?

so they eat each other! what size was the bluegill caught?

F-I-L is short for Father in LAW and it was his tackle box.

The one I caught was about 7-8 inches....Was a gorgeous fish too!! We released it later that evening.

I always used barbed hooks, but I do like thin wire hooks in case it gets swollowed. I can cut the line and the hook will desalve in the stomic acid.
I like to put ice and maybe some stresscoat in the cooler I transport fish in. I never had a fish not make it afterwards.

sushi what were you trying to catch using the bluegill minnow?..crappie?

Threads regarding fishing go in the Fishing Forum. I'll move it for you.

o-kay!

It was brought up once, just make sure when keeping fish you follow state/local laws. Most states prohibit keeping fish alive after you catch them and require additional permitting to keep them alive in home aquaria.

Carry on......
