I agree with the others, you really should seperate your guppies and your gills. Especially if you're concerned about their eating.
I currently have some small bluegills (the biggest being an inch) and they are eating cichlid pellets just fine.
I have always used barbed hooks (too many smart bluegill that take the bait of the hook) and the barbs slow the bgs down. I rarely ever have one swallow the hook (I also use a larger hook) and the damage to their lip is minimal.....just the same as if you pierced your lip.
