Taking home "fished" fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow nobody seems to get my username right.lol

anyways i do have some tiny one 1&2"ers and they take freeze-dried bloodworms happily! i did get them on pellets too.
i just can't seem to feed all the fish unless I "over-feed" the tank... all the topwater guppys eat EVERYTHING..and is making the middle and bottom dwellers starve..
i had to take out a bluegill who didn't have a stomache(it curved INWARDS) because of them..
any suggestions?

do 7" bluegill eat tiny minnows? if so, what size is "tiny"
do they get tame too?

yeah i'll try to get the fish in as quick as possible but i'm afraid that if i do it too fast, it'll damage the hooked area(rip it)..no worries?

Taking very small fish from the wild also reduces the impact (generally speaking) on the fish we love.

For a little bit I was trying to figure out what a crap trap was....toilet? code word for something?:D The I realized you live near salt water HMT and you're actually setting crab traps. I'll bet you catch all kinds of cool things in the bay.

I have caught a bunch of different things

lmb
mullet
flounder
smaller red fish
ground mullet
stone crabs
spade fish

my grandfather caught a otter, it had been flipping the traps to steal the bait, he shortened the rope so it could not be flipped and the thing tried to go into the trap itself to get the bait and drowned.

we mainly catch what is commonly referred to as "Blue Crabs"

crabs are a great diversion on sundays, boil them up after Mass, have a few cold beers

Yes, they will eat minnows. Pellets are better though. Especially better than store-bought minnows. If you have the urge to watch your little predators in action, go catch a few minners and throw them in there.

You don't really have to worry if its lip gets ripped. It doesn't really do anything in the long run, unless you have an extremely dirty tank where it could get infected, if that's even possible. It should heal relatively fast with good quality water and food.

for not getting the fish feed unless you over feed i would try sinking pellets
yes the large bluegill will eat minnows, yes the bluegill should get tame overtime, and finally you shouldn't worry to much about the lips if they get a liitle ripped you can always catch another fish

I have caught and kept a pbass that I caught with a triple-trble hook lure. It was hooked through the lip, gill, and stomach all in 3 different places, it healed fine and is healthy in my tank now.

oh o.k.; since i was thinking it won't be able to feed properly.

i did get sinking but the topwater guppys turn into bottom dwelling guppys..
i tried feeding all types of food at once but couldn't see the results really well..only saw the guppys swarming and wasn't able to see the small bluegill eating or not..

at what size do bluegills start eating other fish?
will a 1&2" guppy be safe from a 7" bluegill?

They eat whatever they can put into their mouths. I've had 4 inch bluegill hit plastic baits 1.5 inches long. They were able to swallow the entire baits and spit them out. With guppies 1 inch long, I'm a bit surprised your 2 inch bluegills haven't tried to pick off a few. I'll guarantee that you'll lose some before your bluegills hit 3 inches. Definitely not safe with a 7 inch blue. It's tough to cohabitate natives with the smaller tropical fishes. I'd go separate tanks whenever you can afford to, or return the natives and stick with tropicals.

:iagree:
you will have to sperate them if you want to have any guppys left, also if you seperate them the bluegill are guaranted some food

well i do have an unlimited supply of live guppys from out pond and lake.lol

but i'll see whats up and post back once i get the big bluegill(IF i get the big bluegill)
i hope they go for my fly/nightcrawler combo next week..i hope it's sunny
