Taking the plunge...again :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im not saying to do it. Dont take me wrong. If you have to ask if you should/'nt overstock a tank, you shouldnt. A keeper will know when they need to upgrade tank size, thin a shoal, or adjust things. And there is a difference between asking for advanced shoal keeping advice, and a new to the hobby keeper asking for the guidelines. Example, When i got my 10" rhom and i knew he wouldnt eat for a while, i didnt ask guys who never kept larger rhoms how long i should expect. I asked guys like JP80911 or smoke what their +10" rhoms would do.

I'm not concerned at all about bio load, the tank has a massive biofilter (each tower (2) is 4ftx18inx18 or close to that)that is turned over about 8 times per hour and the tank is on a drip system, so 24/7 water changes that turns the tank volume over once every 2 weeks. If I don't here back from sharkaquarium this week about some gold's I plan on just ordering 36 rbp from aquascape and see what happens. As much as I would LOVE to have piraya or caribe in there, I don't like the thought of spending a thousand dollars on fish that may or may not rip each other to shreds then have to explain why that thousand dollars worth of fish is all dead to my wife :) I kinda enjoy sleeping in my bed and not the couch ;)

Sounds like you got it all together then! Look forward to future pics!

Ps. Rbp are a good starting point and can adapt to almost anything.

So, AS has 2" Caribe 10/$200 and I am wondering what you guys think about mixing 10 of those since I can't find my golds with say 24 of the 1" rbp? I know I have kept shoals of rbp before where of course some fish grow faster than others so you end up with fish double the size of others and everything was fine but I've never kept caribe. So what do you guys think, good idea, bad idea?

Adult pygo seem to forgive size differences more than juvies ime. A one inch fish is way less than 1/2 a 2" fishes mass. A 2" fish could gobble a 1" in a few bites and cariba are notoriously mean juvies. If you buy 2" cariba, id buy 2" reds too. And ask nicole to size match them best as possible.

I kinda figured that would be what you'd say since cariba are a more aggressive piranha. Now I am thinking (maybe) going with a shoal of 20 cariba instead of the mixed shoal or with the 36 rbp, I just don't know! You guys have owned both, what do you think would make the more impressive display? Personally I'm leaning to the 20 cariba as I'm thinking a shoal of 12"-15" cariba would be monstrous :0 I would only even consider the cariba honestly due to the decent price AS has them for atm.

I love my caribe's they are great and pick up on things very quick. I have a mixed tank with some rbp and caribe but the caribe are just to dominate. Just go with the 29 caribe you will love them

I think mixed shoals are equally impressive if they cohabitate successfully. We can say we have a shoal of this or a shoal of that but a mixed shoal, IMO, sounds cool too. I wish I had the opportunity to do that, it would definitely be worth a shot.. no?

I'm just happy to have a small Piranha family! Also, does anyone know of 2.5" rhoms having a blue iridecent color/shine to them...?
