This is awesome, definately a great read......

Thanks everyone, unfortunately the size of the optic lobe in relation to the preopercular distance is about the same in jars and silvers as taken from photos here. These aros do not want to give up their secrets!

The first illustration is crude but the measurements are correct. I had to learn how to use the line tool for the jar.

Crustman, compliments for a well thought and explained theory.
Two issues, however:
-Silvers live in very "clear " water..may be the colour of tea, but it is definitley clear, clearer i would say, than asians ( one just has to look at those ponds in asian aro farms ).
- Why do Blacks, who share habitat with silvers, have no DE...they are built alike.

Wizzin, the video, pleaase!!

Thanks Miguel, I think this could be related to size differences between the two species. The injury may occur when the juvenile stage is transitioning to the sub adult. This happened with mine! I don't know at what size class the gonads form. Although blacks are more skittish, they might not hit fixed objects with enough force to damage these eye muscles. They are not as massive in body proportion as the silvers. Force=mass x distance. A larger fish with greater mass will exert greater collisional force on these eye muscles. If you look at my photos, the depth of the head of the silver looks larger than the jar.

this is really cool. great stuff crustman!

I'd love to, but it's a risk for me to post the stills of that video. How about some hints on how you can find it yourself. It's HD, It's creator bears the initials D.C., the acronym for the title of the movie is E.R.O.T.S. :D, it's large. I think 1.4Gig. Not difficult to find at all. Good luck. It's worth the wait. I wanted to buy it, but it's not for sale. Ironic isn't it?
