Just wondering how long has DE been a problem in silvers? I have just started keeping them again after about 10yrs. I knew of several silvers 30+ inch. and more than 4yrs. old that did not get it. Two of them I raised myself and the others where freinds. Just wondering if people where having this problem 10 or more years ago? And for the record mine beat themselves up on a routine basis and where fed goldfish and mice when big enough to eat them and krill when smaller.

No heater just room temp, ph 7.5-7.8, city water through softener, water changes when nitrates got above 50, Staple foods stated above plus various insects from back yard and hikari products, housed with a variety of large fish, strong filteration (over 13x turn over an hour) with alot of surface aggitation, neutral color substrate, about .75 watts per gallon lighting on ten hours a day, Raised two at different times. Both where about 6 to start and over 24inch when traded. I had them for over 3 years a piece. Able to see them each for a few years after trading and both got over 30inch and never had a problem with DE. When they got big they ate mice/rats and big goldfish 1 to 3 times a week. If we as a group post info. about fish with and without DE. Then we might really learn something.

some public aquariums sterilize there water through uv and ozonizers because fish such as rays for example need a low bacterial count in the water to stay healthy, and often silver arowana with drop eye share the same tank. infection can be ruled out indefinately.

notes to consider

1) silvers seem to get de in the left eye mostly
2) gigas also get DE, 2 of 4 of mine have DE RIGHT SIDE the two without DE are still under 16 inches
3) how about fatty tissue build up behind the eye...but the why so many silver left eye DE.... the youtube vid i thought was removing excess fatty tissue ....??
