talk me out of this

a bit too small bro, a 20-25g would do better. aros are hi-protein consuming fishes, you'd have a big problem with waste accumulation in a 10g. in a 25, even if you still have to make frequent water changes every 2-3 days like Oddball said, at least the fish will be ensured enough breathing room and space for growth

I never said a 10 would be fine until it is 8". I said they need constant availability to food until they start building fat reserves at around 8". A 10gal will only hold an af aro until it's about 4". Then it has to go to a larger tank or the nitrite buildup in a small tank will be the end of it.

my general rule of thumb for tank size is 2.5 times the length of the fish by 1 times the length of the fish , so for an eight inch fish thats a 20x10 in other words a 10 gallon, what i never considered was chemical build up.

so the only probi can see then is the polutant build up? i really dont think itd be an issue cuz i already do daily water changes on my 29 gallon, so if i do like a 30% water change daily i dont think the nirates will have much of a chance to build up, also the tank is currently filtered by a 30 gallon external power filter that came with my 29 gal and i upgraded to a 50 gal biowhell on that tank. so if i fed him bidaily with frozen bloodworms, bout half a cube right? then did a 20-30 precent water change every morning when i do my 29 gallon's water change, would it be fine?

sorry to seem stupid but theres just not a whole lot of info on this fish.......

Just a thought, there maybe reasons why it would work. but could he use a Rubbermaid container till he got a big enough tank?

Definitely would work. However, the bin would need to be placed high. Af aros (like all aros) are instinctually afraid of large overhead movement (ala birds of prey). Keeping the bin low will cause alot of increased stress.

a ten gallon is WAY to small! if you cant even house it properly as a baby now then i wouldnt bother, the aro will grow large FAST! maybe u should wait till u have the proper accomodations for such a fish. you may be eager to get one but it wouldnt be fair to the aro.

well they didnt come in,. and dmopar, u obiosly didnt read the first post, it would go in either a 10 gall or 29 gall till it out grew out of it in november when i get a 195. the rubber maid was a great idea cuz i have a 55 gall lying around.... mabe next shipment theyll make it in.

i think ill have to wait till i get my tank and then look for a larger aro........... or i could buy the 20 gallon arclyic thats for sale at my lfs for $10, a couple of cheap sponge filters and set the tank up on the floor....... i dont know damit!

Check out my last post. Don't keep the tank/bin on the floor. Besides, doing those frequent water changes will be near impossible with a siphon if the tank is on the floor.

ya forgot that part..... ok no aro for me, for a while at least........what i hoped would happen did, u guys talkd me out of being stupid, thnx a million
