Tanganyika shell dweller biotope?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Escargot shells work great but they do break down in water over time. A good rule of thumb with shellies is to put 2 shells per fish in the tank so they always are able to pick their own. That and to keep them in a colony if you can. A tank that is shallow and wide works better than tall and long. Their territories aren't that big and they don't usually cause any damage when they spar. For some reason, I forgot how many I actually have. I have 13, not 10.

Well it's a twenty gallon long and I was thinking of 6 brichardi and like 14-16 shells would that be good?with black sand?

I did mine with snail shells and sand and a rock or two. I don't have any pics atm though. Also you said brichardi, neolamprologus brichardi are not shell dwellers they are rock dwellers and get bigger than shell dwellers

I they're not?so would you recommend a shell dweller to me? What about multifasciatus?

Don't let the multi' s size deter you they are great and a 20l is perfect for them. I would use two shells per fish but they will breed and you will want quite a bit extra. Escargot shells are my recommendation. They will colonize and help rear new batches of fry. Then you can rehome when you get to many. If you can't find any PM me when I was looking for them I found a breeder who ships.

Multis are a great option. I actually like the ocellatus gold b/c of their personalities I really enjoyed the ones that I used to have. I would love to get stappersi, speciosus I think they are cool. If you want a big shell dweller you can go with hequi they are awesome.

I prefer ocellatus...very fascinating little fish, always doing stuff. Fun to observe and easy to breed

just got my first group of Multis...awesome little fish!!

we have 6 in a 16g long tank, we used crush coral sand to help the ph stay stable ..we use tanganyika buffer to keep the ph up around the high 8-9 ish.. but my test kit does not read that high so its a guess.

we found a cheap bag of shells and use any left over mystery shell eggs my black worms clean out.. they seem to like living under the rocks we have as well, anubia and java moss are in the tank.

no current shots but here is what it looked like when we first set it up.

sand was just stured up in this pic..so its a bit cloudy, we added more rocks shells, and some pvc tubing.
