I use aragonite sand in mine for a buffer. I have a ton of escargot shells in it too. I have 8 dwarf Sumbu. I also have a pair of Julidochromis Gombi and a pair of Neolamprologus Helianthus in a 29 gallon with them.

Which ever you like. The black sand will fall through the crushed coral. I like the aragonite myself, but it's not 100% necessary. If you like black sand use it.
Yeah they like high PH. Which is what the aragonite sand does. Crushed coral will do the same. I know a guy who keeps tangs in tanks with inert substrate and his do just fine.
I bought some gold ocellatus from archaquatics. They weren't badly priced and they have spawned for me.
