tank and floor strength

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
once again danny boy i do not mean to offend you, you may know everything there is to know about your building codes but ours may be very different

yeah they are slightly different from what i have seen from my time in the staes last year, but the principles are the same. i can try to tell people the facts until im blue in the face but why bother. go ahead and put a 125 gal tank upstairs. me i would happily put a 300 gal tank upstairs of any house built since the 40's no probs. but hey if a plumber and a mechanic say im wrong so be it.

What's everybody so worried about? Get a tank as big as you'd like. I'm guessing the floor will hold.

I am wondering who I could call to over look my house/ floor; would I call my insurance broker or would it be a structural engineer? Basicly I want to be covered in case of damage, 100% coverd. I respect everyones opinion but because there is such a contrast in views I need a professional, with credentials I can validate, to over look my conditions. If I can't get a guarantee then the tank will be setup in the basement :(

Thanks for the feed back :)

we call them structural surveyors over here, they are the guys that work for insurance companys on checking your house over before you are lent the money to pay for it. failing that ask your local qualified builder.

Just my opinion but I would not let my insurance company in my house to see what I plan I already pay too damn much. if they saw 400 gallons of water in my house I bet my premium would go up.. screw the man!!

ahh we finally agree my man!

lol, i was actually thinking about bringing my 150 upstairs, my tank room is in the basement (it is a finished basement)

Yeah don't call the insurance demon err...broker.

Well here's my plans for the 100gal upstairs.
The landlord said go for it, though if anything goes wrong I'm liable for any damage. I can deal with that.
SO anyway I'm going to put a 3/4" piece of high grade plywood under the stand to help distribute the weight better then on just the 4 2x4's legs of the stand. I also might also attach the stand to the wall via lag bolts into studs. That will help incase of an E.Q. I'm not sure if I will just cut the ply to the size of the stand or maybe go bigger and just get a throw rug to cover the ply in front of the tank.
What do you all think about those plans?

I'm sure I probably don't have to do any of this for just a 100gal, but I'd rather over do something and have piece of mind, then take a gamble and actually have to pay to fix something.
