TANK BROKE!?!?!?!!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think the tank being unlevel would cause this unless it was off by a lot. I just put a tank up that was perfectly level but was I filled the 20 gallon under it the tank is off by about 1/4 in which ill fish during my next water change.

Other things that could have caused it could be a heavy decoration putting pressure on ur stones which caused the glass to crack.

I agree most of my tanks are off level apart for bigger ones I dont worry. As long as its not twisting(off front to back and side to side) I dont see any major issues.

Strange it has broken, how thick is the glass?

1/4 or slightly thicker

Theory:

A 4' level, probably placed on top of the tank and not the wood <--- think about that. Try sliding that level across the stand and see what happens.

The top, or surface, of the stand was probably at least 2" thick wood, possibly a DIY stand. Unlikely to warp with a ton of water constantly holding it down, but the OP said it was emptied for a while, maybe long enough for the wood to warp.

When it was set up again the wood couldn't un warp fast enough.

Lesson learned = Use foam.

Foam is a bad idea. Always has been always will be.

Say what you all will against it, but foam compresses to some degree. We all know this. So if your stand isn't perfectly level and the foam isn't perfectly level then the foam will compress to make it all right. But at the end of the day where it compresses is still holding more weight. Still giving an uneven load. Solid surfaces distribute weight better. The only thing that has more pressure are the sides of an uneven load, but it's minimal because it all still goes downwards with gravity. My tank has been set for nearly 5 years unlevel on a particle board stand (3/8ths of an inch) with no problem and it's coming up on being 10 years old and closing on needing to be resealed mostly for aesthetics. As the black silicone is no longer a perfect line, has some tapering to it and I'm picky.

It's not level, twisted on one side and the motor helped by vibrating the micro-cracks produced in that region of your tank. Should have used foam for better weight distribution and vibration reduction. Even if foam is uneven, it will give way to the very WEIGHT of the tank.

And wood doesn't, which makes the rest of your argument irrelevant. If the OP had been using foam this thread likely wouldn't exist.

Using foam will not keep a tank from twisting on a warped or bowed stand
