I'm having a tough time with this.
How does a heater fail and cause this kind of damage ?

I'm going with Pyramid_Party on this.

I am glad to see I am not the only one who thinks this does not add up

I called this on post #47...

it doesn't add up.

but that doesn't change the fact that the tank broke, the heater split open and marineland steaths are still crap compared to Ebo Jager :)

in all likelyhood, the tank cracked, the water poured out, the heater ran dry, didn't shut off like it was supposed to (don't they have a safety shut off to prevent from running dry?) and split open.

the heater didn't cause the tank to fail, the tank failed and cause the heater to explode/split open as there was no water left in it.

thats probably what happened.

because a heater splitting open cannot crack a tank full of water. all that happens you and your fish feel electric current going through the water.

nor can a plastic heater be knocked into a tank and crack it (Stealths are thermo plastic not glass)

still, it doesn't change the fact that this was a disaster. and an awful thing to happen to a fellow hobbyist.

luckily no one was hurt badly and hopefully the water damage will not be too severe or costly.

It is not out of the realm of possibilities that the heater caused this. If it did explode I am sure it started to expand first (since its plastic), which would cause the heater to pop out of the suction cup holders. If that is the case, and the heater exploded, it could have most certainly hit the POI as shown in a previous post. As to the above poster, anything hitting glass hard enough will break it, even plastic. So the placement of the suctions cups is actually irrelevant to anything IMO.

Now, since it is plastic and had to expand before it "exploded" that could have caused an increase in pressure within the heater, causing the explosion for lack of a better word, which would cause the heater to smash into the glass.

I fully support the OP's story for the simple fact that it is obviously not the first time this has happened to someone. If this was the one and only case, I would be skeptical too. But, this even happened to another poster on this thread, down to the exploding portion.

The lesson learned here today is not to leave your fish tank(s) in a little brothers room. I hear more stories of little brothers or little relatives breaking tanks more than I hear about failing heaters. So now you will never know what really happened to your tank, and your little bro will never fess up. Why should he? Its better you take all the blame and have to be responsible for all the damage.

And guys, take a good look at the heater. It has not exploded, its not in pieces. The heater is CRACKED, just the way it does when left out of water. I'm skeptical that a heater that has cracked has enough force to shatter a fish tank. Good luck trying to sue, as said before Marineland has money and lawyers too.
