Tank choices.

You're saying a 5 foot tank? I'd get a tank wider than 18 inch if it were me.

I have a 125, 6 foot by 18 inch wide, and I regret to this day. Couple hundred bucks more, I could have got a 180 or 2-something.

18 inches wide is just enough to raise a fish into being in too small a tank. Get a 24 inch wide tank to keep CA cichlids.

Agreed. Have a 150 and its a waste should have kust went with the 180

Lol I also have a 6' by 18". I don't think it was a waste though. If I had a 180g I would still want bigger haha. You always want bigger. 18" opens up a lot of sa/ca cichlids

LOL yes, I agree 24 is better for sure. And yes, 6ft would be better as well. However I only have 5ft to work with in my apt. I have a 6x18 at my dads and I agree, I wish I had gotten the 180 at 6x24. However this particular thread was less about the size of the tank and more about would it be worth it to get an acrylic over glass. Which I think judging by the response that it is not at this current size. But it is worth it at larger sizes. There is a 9x2x2 glass for sale right now for 100$ and boy do I wish I had the room! But I do not unfortunately.

You should call around and talk to acrylic tank builders, distributors, etc. Acrylic prices are volatile, they MAY have come down over the last year, and everyone here is thinking it's expensive based on a price they got a year or more ago.

Acrylic might be much cheaper than we all realize right now.

I have priced out acrylic and glass tanks (at a larger size though) but like ragin said its worth to check some prices. The acrylic tank i priced out were cheaper $$$ than the glass and were also thicker.

Try truvu, midwest customs (i like them best), and fishtanksdirect
