Tank Cracking - Arn't you guys scared?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of my tanks are second hand old tanks. The oldest are 50+ years old (including slate bottoms!) None of the small tanks leak (resealed around 15 - 20yrs ago I believe).

All of the older larger ones have leaked and had to be resealed apart from one 6' which is on origonal silicon and ~25+ years old and the silicon still looks like new! I'm getting wary of it though so may well reseal it soon....

As to insurance, I was told by my insurance company that my standard house insurance would cover damage from an aquarium splitting (different places may be different though).

WOW!! that's old!

there is more than meets the eye as far as Aqueon vs Marineland too.

I had my 150 custom done in black silicone.

the silicone that Aqueon uses is the same as what Oceanic uses - it stays black.

I have heard complaints that the black silicone that Perfecto uses can turn a tan colour. I have seen this first hand with a Perfecto setup at my LFS..

they, unfortunately, seem to build the big tanks using the cheapest stuff possible..

ticks me off since my LFS only carries Perfecto tanks now because they are the cheapest ones I guess...I had to spsecial order my Aqueon tank.

well worth the money though.

That's interesting! Our LFS owner also pointed out that Perfecto has apparently "tanked" (pun intended) as the economy crashed. So they're looking for a new owner. Bottom line is that the warranty may or may not be there should you need it. AGA does the "forever" warranty.

Despite only having Perfecto tanks in-store, their supplier had an AGA tank on the shelf. They gave me the AGA for the same price as the Perfecto... which they were already giving me a great deal on. This is why it's good to support a good LFS!

Did you know that 95% of what you worry about never ever happens, and of the remaining 5% very little of it actually plays out as bad as your mind makes it to be.

So why let the worries of tomorrow screw up the joys of today and leave you riddled with fears and doubts based on the landscape of yesterday.

Live life with the eyes of a child filled with the look of wild eyed wonder at the newness of the day before you!!
For some reason got a nice calm reading this post. Well said and very true to life in my experience so far.:headbang2 Unless it comes to getting in the cage against someone who is a better brazilian jiu jitsu tactician then you need to listen to your trainer :)

Yep. I'm already on my second floor and the room isn't finished yet. It wasn't water damage though. My dog chased his tail and scarred it all up. We had to accept more laminate as a replacement and I'm not happy with it. It has a fiber core (as in paper fibers). It specifically states that water damage will void the warranty. I also found out that damage from women in high heals will void the warranty too. :nilly:
I hate that in my house in Monterey a girl wore high heals on my new laminate down stairs and left a little star every where she stepped from her heel.:screwy:

hmm..perfecto was bought out by Marineland two years ago..

since the ownership changed, the tanks have got nicer in looks only

ie the edges are now bevelled

but its the same thin silicone/glass and flimsy braces as before..:screwy:

they make some of their tanks to probably the minimum safety standard, and I don't like that..

eg. the 120g Aqueon (4x2x2) weighs 191 pounds.

the same tank from Perfecto weighs 144 pounds (stats on their respective websites)

the difference is because Marineland uses thinner glass..

I had 2 glass tank when i first started keeping fish. 1 was 30 gallons which cracked and leaked all over kitchen within 2 months. the other was a 60 gallon that cracked after 2 years. Now i only use acrylic.

But these are smaller gallons and thinner glass. Probably does not apply to bigger tanks with thicker glass.

For those who have 100G+ tanks are you worried about the tanks cracking? Leaks?

I want to buy a new one but I cannot imagine my tank breaking on me, my hardwood floor will be destroyed.

How do you convince yourselves to take this risk?

you buy a flux capacitor . ;)
