I never chemically dechlorinate but just use my python and cascade the water in the tank.

Oscarlover, why would you say temperature change?

Are you saying you DO NOT use chlorine remover after a water change?
If so that could be the reason.

Sounds like an ammonia spike.

What kind of substrate do you use?

I never just use chlorine remover, I always use chloramine remover. you never know when the water company will add some. I losts some big frontosas once because of this. aerating and regular chlorine removers will not remove chloramine. also check the whole tank for any fish that may have died and are hidden, that can make your PH crash if you have poor buffer, I found a dead fish once hidden in one of those castles you buy at LFS's

I have never used chlorine or chloramine remover. Unless it just changed there has never been chloramine and I have never had a single problem with chlorine and I have been in the same house for 7+years and had multiple tanks always setup up since. Maybe its a problem now but it doesn't seem likely to me. I have had a huge variety of fish too from arrowana to puffers and pretty much everything in between.

I have coral in that tank and the pH is just over 8.

Maybe there was a dead fish in there I didn't notice and when I changed the water I stirred it up that caused the crash? Its a 120g tank and I hadn't noticed any fish missing.

If it was chlorine or chloramine I probably would have had problems with my other tank too that I did a change in earlier in the week.

I know in my state they are expanding the use of chloramines more and more. Areas that have never had them, are getting them now.

I would never do water changes without adding dechlor with ammonia remover in it.

My friends tank crashed and he never use chemicals on his tank. He always tested his tank and had no chlorine. One day he did a water change and they all died. We tested the water and he had high chlorine in the water.. The water company started adding more chemical....

Do you guys add the chemicals to the tank before refilling with water, after refilling or premix in buckets?

I add mine to the bucket I am filling so I don't forget.
