Tank depth?

Silver dollars dont HAVE to be in there, i just like them, and thought they would look good with CAs. Are there any smaller varieties of SDs?

Back to the cichlids, i know that when they are in tanks, mine only use the bottom 10" anyway, so i do not think it would be too much of a problem, as long as i dont get too big of fish. Really, it would be the same (depth wise) as keeping a pair of convicts in a 20L with 2" of gravel (10 inches of water)

they might jump out

i have considered that. Hopefully 3 sides will be up against walls, and i will close any gap their may be. The forth side though, i do not know. I will probably add a 6-8" wide acrylic lip to help keep the fish in the tank

Okay - it seems like there is only one thing left to sort out - the Silver Dollars. Is 10" enough water depth or not?

If not, are there any other suitable dithers that are relatively easy to find and come from CA, that could thrive in 10" of water?

Mexican tetras, though in some locations they are hard to find. I tend to use buenos ares tetras, since they look almost identical.

Those would work, i think :) Thanks for the suggestion :D Might have to end up going with buenos aires tetras though, if i cant find mexicans:irked:

I think the cichlids themselves would be alright, most likely. You are correct, convicts do often stay towards the bottom especially in a pair-only 20L. I would have some concerns about the silver dollars and also getting enough rockwork and caves in there for the cichlids to have their territories. But I'm sure with that size footprint, you'll be alright. Sounds pretty cool!
