Tank levels good...fish dying?my pbass...

The algae usually starts off a little cloudy and then if not treated my tank turns green(water). Should I just stop using the algae destroyer and slowly add fish?

Here is how I would personally do it.

Keep the cats and pleco you have in it now. Don't do anything to the water, for 1 week. Check the levels of everything. Don't do anythign to the water for another week. Then check the levels. Then I would add 1 fish and wait a week. Check the levels. Then add 2 fish, waita week, then add 2 more fish.

You can also do 1 fish every 4 days or so. Keep in mind. You don't need to do a water change, if the levels are below 40ppm for nitrates. Assuming that your amonia and nitrites are low as well.

As for your algae, make sure your lighting isnt on for more than 8-10 hours a day during this cycling. Also any plants you want to add will be beneficial at combating the algae. Also it'll keept he nitrates low.

** I know thinks like metals, and other disolved solids from tapwater, will need to be replenished. However I feel it would be better for you to not mess with the water as much as possible, until you can make a stable envoirment.

Moral of the story. Don't do a water change, unless you either have amonia, nitrites, or nitrates above 40. While you're setting up a tank.

Gangster, CoryWM has given you the best advice to follow. Try & do it exactly as he suggested. I think you will have excellent results.

I am curious why the 120G needs algae destroyer and the 55G doesn't. Is it the length of time the tank lights are on or is the 120 located near a window or sunlit area?

Please post what the ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte readings are.

Also, what brand water conditioner are you using?

Thanks a ton guys/girls. I use the algae destroyer cause my 120g is near a window. I have the black backing on the back and side facing the window. The 55g doesnt have sunlight coming in. The 120 has the lights on about 15hrs and the 55 about 12.

I havent realized the diff. between nitrate and nitrites....YES I am a rookie...just now tested nitrates for the first time. Ammonia 0 , NITRATES 3 , nitrites 0 . But would not cycling the tank make the fish sieze up and die?

Most definately that could cause the fish to die. It's one of the leading causes right behind amonia poisoning. Also do you have a thermometer in your tank? If your tank is getting direct sunlight you also have to worry about it changing the temperature. It could be 78 degrees in the morning, then by evening, be 84 degrees. then by morning again its 78.. that constant cycle of temperature will put serious stress on your fish also.

With direct sunlight reaching the aquarium, you'll be battling algae/temp problems all the time, is there a way you can leave the blinds/curtains down? or move the tank? the other option is to HEAVILY plant the tank, so that there are not any nutrients left for the algae to grow. Although that won't help with your temps. If that is an issue.

My money's on the "algae destroyer" chemical. There's been threads on a lot of forums about that stuff making fish sick and killing them (depending on what it was you used).

your tank actually might be cycled ive heard alot of bad stuff about algae destroyer and fish

The blinds are closed....its more like indirect light hitting the tank. I'll hold off on the algae killer and throw in some plants when I get a chance.

One more...what should I do about the algae destroyer already in the tank? Its been a week since I have added any. Im not gonna put anymore in and im gonna throw in some plants hopefully today. And the temp stays between 82-84.
