I was looking around on here, an few have said something about lighting. I was woundering the best light for my tank. I got black sand an no live plants, the light that came with my tank seems very bright an they arnt to active with this light on. Just put the sand in today, they swim all around when lights off. When I turn it on there to busy hiding. I thought black sand might of helped that a little and make my tank look sharp but guess it didnt work. I thought about moonlights? or some sun light or something? any idea's?

Personally i'm putting in Blue lighting, my sister in law has a bue light and it looks great in her tank, plus its on the darker side, should be perfect.

I'll wait for the experienced guys to chime in though before i go ahead with it.

whats the bulb called so I can check it out? I am new to lights and piranhas I always had community fish growing up an I just used the light that came with the tank. lol. But my black sand an blue light sounds like it would be nice.

I mean my P's come out, but they arnt as active unless im feeding. Usally I turn the light on for awhile during the day trying to get them used to it. Then I turn it off because I feel bad for them when there not active. I had a different light in my other tank an they didnt seem to mind it. An it made the color in my tank great. This bulb sucks. Id like to try a color bulb of some sort like dals said

I'll find out tomorrow for you.

well alot of ps do live in the amazon, and its cloudy so
if ur not seein alot of activity try some black water additive or peat moss to tan it a tiny bit..or try floating plants to provide some cover for the fish, both these will work...
and on the lighting subject i wouldnt worry to much about the light unless u want plants or to bring out certain colors..(red spectrum lights bring out reds blue spectrums bring out blues).
It honestly shouldnt bother ur fish unless there nocturnal or very sensitive to light.
Or if u have a huge gazillion watt metal halide blaring down.....

lol that'll be me in a few weeks (maybe days depends how fast i rig them up). I picked up 4 100 watt halides off of kijiji going to rig them up with 8 36" t5 actinic bulbs(460 nm)(normal output) in addition, for a deeper (bluer) water effect.

ill let you guys know how much my piranhas are affected by it in a few weeks lol.

If you have no live plants, why bother with lighting? Some people have been able to get their Ps to adjust to it but most will tell you that their Ps don't like light. It puts them in fight or flight mode. I just don't see the point of going through all the trouble unless you intend to make it a planted tank or you have no source of natural light near the tank
