If you have no live plants, why bother with lighting? Some people have been able to get their Ps to adjust to it but most will tell you that their Ps don't like light. It puts them in fight or flight mode. I just don't see the point of going through all the trouble unless you intend to make it a planted tank or you have no source of natural light near the tank
yep i agree the only reason i will be going with the high intensity lights im going to be using is because i have live plants and im quite intrested in adding more live plants with even higher light requirements

if you don't have live plants all you need is enough light to properly observe your fish and give them a day/night cycle

You can have plants without lights! My RBP tank has a few different kinds of sword plants n I don't use lights.

your plants will die eventually

you may have skipped grade 8 biology but it's common knowledge that plants require light for photosynthesis without which they will quickly burn through their sugar reserves and run out of energy to live.

My plants are thriving! They give me shoots n lil pads all the time!I dint use lights, but my tank gets light from windows.even through couple layers of glass you just can't beat the sun.guess I showed up to class that day in biology

oh well than that makes sense sunlight beats even the best metal halides as far as intensity is concerned

the only light that glass really removes well is UV which plants don't use anyway

i apologize for any misunderstandings sorry if i came off harsh.

No worries! Just one more thing everyone should try to think about when deciding tank placement.one of many factors that might work for me but might not you.

thoughts on moonlights? poor darkness? I think moonlights look great. Does it effect the night cycle of the fish?

Does your tank have hiding places for the fish? When I turn on my lights my P's keep swimming around looking for a hiding place. I dont really have any except for small plants I bought at the LFS. Will they be fine? I am worried they may become stressed. I have a 55w 10000k Day light and 55w Blue light. Used to be for my saltwater tank.
