I stick my lights on around 8 am or so and turn them off at 9-10 pm.

If you really felt lighting was an issue, place your tank out in the elements.

personally i don't really think our fish have an instinct for daytime hours and most of them are tank bred anyways. but i normally keep my lights on from 7:00am-6:00pm

So would nocturnal fish swim happily under 400 watt metal halides and a school of silver dollars act like they are 'sleeping' on the substrate at 2 pm?

Tank bred does not take away thier natural instincts. Otherwise, cichlids could lose thier natural behaviour, characins may lose their school instinct and the upside-down catfish may swim upright.

You are technically messing with their natural sleeping/nocturnal pattern and biological clock, right? I think that's cruel.

what do you know about their natural environment? they have fish intelligence which means they don't give a rat's ass as long as they feel safe.

I guess it's cruel to some.. but I think it would be crueler for me to remove it and fry it up..

I think Levi is right. You put them in a glass box where you basically play god telling them when/what to eat, how much current they're gonna have, how warm the water will be.. you already screwed them up beyond lighting cycles..

(Not that I leave my tank lights on 24/7 but in all honesty I have before)

I dunno about that--if I don't get sleep, I go all psychological! All animals need a day night cycle. And heck, my electric bill is high enough! Every light over my 8 tanks are on timers.
