TANK MATE FOR MY OSCARS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscars aren't very aggressive, and the other fish could kill your Oscars. My JD has not killed but really beaten up an Oscar in the past. He was ok with one twice he size though. You can keep then with any large catfish and plecos and something like a green severum

I was told you cant mix old world and new world cichlid together. I wanted some electric yellows and blues to brighten up my oscar tank but was told not to do that as they have different water needs is this correct or was I mislead?

Yes it is. Oscars and other South American cichlids require softer water. Their diets are different from some africans which are more herbivorous.

If you wanna mix Old world with New, try Central American Cichlids like Jack dempsey. Their parameters are more similar.

some nice catfish like a redtail or tsn....or some silver dollars or pacuss...somethin not to aggressive with color...

if you want something that won't eventually outgrow the tank then stay away from the clown knives, aros, tsn, rtc, and pacus.

silver dollars would work as would a larger rainbow species. for cichlids you should be able to add a synspilum, but several of the other Viejas could get very aggressive and bully the oscars. green terror, salvini, jack dempsey, texas, nicaraguense, chocolate, severum, uaru, firemouths, or convicts should work. if you want another large cichlid (~12" adult size) then I'd probably only add 1 more. if you want smaller ones then you could probably add a couple. you might even be able to add one more large one and a medium sized one like a con or firemouth. :)

jack dempsey, green terror, convicts, more oscars, jewel cichlids, plecos(hopefully a nice one not a common one) synodontis catfish, crayfish\lobsters, hopefully you get something nice, good luck

There are lots of good ideas already... I'd choose a pleco, some cichlids like uro or synspillum, and a catfish like a armored cat, Callichthys callichthys, or a raphael (of the smaller ones).

Best regards.

Daniel.
