Tank mate suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bowfin for sure.

Unfortunately pretty hard to find here, but if the opportunity arises I'll be sure to get one.

Some options from the top of my head...

1. Lungfish

2. Stingrays (again this is hit or miss)

3. Fancy Plecos

4. Non to Semi-Aggressive Cichlids which get large enough to not be eaten

The Gars and any of the above options will eventually need a tank larger than 120Gal.

Good luck,

I know they'll need larger in the long run, but I'll be leaving the country in just a few years and will be passing all the fish to someone else.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm a little scared of stingrays, since I go overseas pretty often(and I'll be in National Service, army).

Kittens. Lots and lots of fluffy kittens. ;) I'm just kidding about the kittens, by the way. :grinno:

In all seriousness, the following two types of fishes come to mind when I think of tankmates for gars that will not bother the gars under most circumstances and are legal in Singapore (to my knowledge):

  • Bichirs: Seem to be the #1 most recommended tankmates for gars after other gars.
  • African arowana: Can be hit or miss, but more as a result of the gars picking on it rather than the other way around.
Other than those two groups, I can't really think of anything else that's legal for you, safe for the gars, and hasn't already been turned down by you.

Everything is still legal here, except those that were banned way back(Piranhas, Electric eels, none of which should be kept with Gars anyway).

here's what I've kept on various occasions with my florida gars :

1. silver aro,

2. ornate bichir,

3. motoro ray,

4. Indo tiger (dat),

5. parrot (mistake but worked fine),

6. Butti,

7. CA/S A cichlids from jags to GT, oscars, depends on whatever works for you.

good luck finding tankmates. I'd recommend some kinda datnoid.

Really? I thought that lungfishes were illegal where you are?

In that case, add Australian lungfish and South American lungfish to your list of potential tankmates. Avoid the African lungfishes like the Plague when it comes to housing them with any other fishes!

^ south american are all but unavailable...australian lungs aren't legal unless you get the AVA to inspect your facilities first. pretty retarded, i know.

Michel, how about korean perch? mine's been behaving thus far and i believe madding's also tried this combo - or at least i know he has 3 k.perches.

I know you were looking for something to liven up the tank so this is probably the complete opposite of what you want, but what about large doradids like megalodoras, oxydoras, pterodoras, etc.

Go bichirs!

If you are looking for something non-aggressive and active, go senegals.
They are also pretty cheap to find here.

Mine swim all around the tank and when its feeding time, it push its face against the tank like a cute dog, asking for food.
