I have recently rescued a 12" Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons) from a 25 Gallon tank who's other inhabitants were more than enough to vastly overcrowd the aquarium by themselves. Unfortunately, I am only able to put it in a 30 Gallon tank at the moment (but at least, he doesn't have to put up with the extreme overcrowding that existed in the previous owner's tank).

I am considering a 72" x 24" x 18"H aquarium as his new home, with hopes that the beast will some day reach it's full potential of 19 to 20". I'm looking for ideas as to other species that would be suitable as tank mates. I am wondering if there are any small to medium sized cichlids that might work. Does anybody know what species it would co-habitate with in the wild?

Thanks, as always. :D

Thats a 135G's. Plenty of space. However he may already be stunted to an extent that he will not grow much, however it may just rocket in size.

As for cichlids, I wouldnt put any mild-aggressive cichids in with it. Some dwarf cichlids and or angels, JD's, Severums, Kribs etc.
Many other tetras, oddbalss, loaches, schooling fish, etc will mix fine with these.

I've got one kept with an oscar and two blue acaras, as well as a bunch of loaches and a couple of plecos. Everyone seems to ignore the knife for the most part, except for the butterfly pleco - they argue a bit about the large central log they both like to hide under. Mind you, every cichlid is different, and mine are all quite young right now, I may wind up with compatibility problems down the road.

I've got mine in a 120 with 6 angels, 8 guaramis, 2 rainbow sharks, 2 red tailed sharks, 2 bala sharks, 13 siamese algae eaters, 1 pleco, 3 full grown swordtails, and about a dozen baby swordtails. He's been in there about a week and so far everyone is doing fine. he doesn't pick on anybody and they all leave him alone...

One question, since I put him in the tank, he's stayed hidden inside a ship that I have in there and hasn't really come out at all. any suggestions on how to get him to maybe set up residence in a bit more visible hiding place? I set up a couple spots where he would feel hidden but be more visible (log, clear tube) but he stays in the ship. Thanks...

These fish are nocturnal and crave dark places to hide. Once he feels comfortable in your tank, he may come out some more. But be sure to provide shade for him to get out of the light yet still be visible.

Mine is in my discus tank. The only time I see him is when I put live blackworms into the cone feeder. He sweeps up, gobbles some & is gone.

Ours is about 9" or so...we picked him up as part of a tank deal. He's in a 60 gallon tank with some baby Pbass and stupid shark (irredecent...long story..available by pm request.) there is also a red crayfsh in the tank and a 7" pleco.
