Tank mates for a pair of Oscars.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Welcome ... 110gal is a great tank for a pair of Oscars. Put in a rare/ unusual pleco fish for cleaning or just any pleco that you like. I think pleco fishes are enough. They will suck left over food from the bottom of your tank. Oscars eat a lot so don't over feed them if you don't want the tank water goes bad. Fun to watch , but it is not a good idea to feed them live food. Good luck

Well, we have a couple of common plecos we've had since late last year that are up to about five inches now, and I was thinking about putting one of them in with him. Unfortunately, the albino Oscar died. I came home from work and couldn't find her until the kids noticed she'd wedged herself under a rock. I guess the red Oscar is gonna fly solo for a while. That's too bad.

I do worry about putting a pleco in the big tank, because the floor is a grid and he obviously won't be comfortable on it, but I need it to protect the planted substrate. The Oscar can't get in there to dig the plants up and I get all the benefits of having a planted tank, so it seemed like a neat idea at the time, even though cleaning will be a chore. I'll post some pics later so you can see what I'm talking about.

Is your new tank cycled? If not you will need to do daily water changes and daily water tests if you plan to cycle with your fish. You will need more filtration than your new tank offers. I would add an AQ110 now and later on add another or a canister. Big O's need big filter!
Oscars will flourish eating pellets. No need for live feeders. Keep up on water changes so they don't get HITH disease.
A gar would make a good tank mate and should readily take the same pellets.

a gar will outgrow a 110.. I've fed my Oscars live for years.. minnows are fine.. goldfish are not... as someone else already said.. I do it as enrichment.. gives them something to do to keep them from developing some bad habits. And Mollies home-grown would be fine as well.. my guys also love nightcrawlers, and have packed on some nice weight and color w/ a variety of live and pelleted foods. ATM I have a sun cat/eclipse cat as they are often called.. get approx 12" but usually less. they look similar to a bullhead imo.. but have a more chocolate color to them and some yellow. not a very colorful fish, and I rarely see him, but my tanks extra food vanishes. And I've never had conflicts between him and my O's. They are also cheap, and readily available fish, and hearty as anything else I've kept. commons plecos... beware. slime coat suckers potentially, and will grow huge, and are far more dirty then most others.. but by adding something to eat extra food.. you are swapping one problem for another potentially.. food bits to suck up/ more poop to suck up. nothing is going to eat the extras.. and produce no waste... But if there is.. I'de like 8 plz!

for any other tank-mates your best off imo w/ other Cichlids. Oscars usually are all talk.. no show. Playground bullies. I've found fish that are inconsiquential to teh Oscars shows.. but can take a hit or two and not rip them up make the best tank-mates. and tbh.. one of the best co-mates I've had for an Oscar.. Is a koi... lol.

I filled the tank up and threw some conditioner in it and let it run for a couple of days before I added five mollies to it with the hope that it would speed up the cycling process a little. They were basically an inconsequential bio load on a tank this size, but the red Oscar was getting too pissy with his tank mates in the 55, so we had to move him in and the others out. We've been testing the water every two or three days and the levels are still nominal. I am planning on adding a Filstar XP4 to the setup eventually, but I don't need it yet.

Also, I'm hoping to feed the pleco a nice variety of vegetables (if I can get him to eat them) and keep him well nourished so he doesn't get the inclination to start slime sucking. I know there's an off chance he'll start anyway, but I'll keep an eye on it.
