Hi, i was wondering if anybodys had any success with any kind of tank mates with an elongatus piranha? if not what kind of fish would you recommend for experimenting.

maybe pleco? you can try to have some convicts in the tank too. just make sure you have big enough tank and lot of hiding places. if you have 1 or more breeding pair then the convicts can also be used as food source.

Serrasalmus piranha's are a different story: most species must be kept solitary, because they are very aggressive and intolerant and will most likely kill every other fish that enters their tank, whether from the same species or not. Some will even attack their keeper when (s)he approaches the tank, their own reflection and even aquarium hardware inside the tank (heaters, powerheads!) in not always safe. A few species have been kept with more than one, like the Maculatus Piranha, Spilopleura Piranha and Geryi Piranha, but there is no guarantee it will work out: a very large tank, enough hiding places and a very strict feeding regime are an absolute necessity to even have a chance to succeed.

Thought this might be useful for ya x

Are you kiddin' me????.

The elongatus is believe to be the most agressive rhom of them all!!!:duh:

No piranha can share room with any other fish mate unless you are talking of "experimenting" as a mean for you to see some fish sheded apart, but if it is what you want don't pay attention to this....

snails....

there's a whole sticky about this. General rule of thumb- piranhas kill everything, at least mine does.

as long as the tank mate isn't big enough to eat the piranha

you cant have tankmates with that one it will be bad. i had an elong it was like 2 inches in a temporary 20 gallon i added a bunch of danios and he ripped em all up in a day no survivors he was really cool but died. i think he was chasing a small danio and hit the glass :(

hahaha you are funny but you can try to keep a common pleco that is 8-12 inches but he will probaly will disapear haha but beside that nope

How long are you expecting the tank mate to live? Everything I dropped in with my elong disappeared in about 30 seconds. lol.

the term tankmate implies a certain level of civility 'mate' as in friend. Piranhas don't really have mates (unless you count pygos in shoal but even then there's a certain amount of cannibalism). You can put fish in your tank, but think of them more as food than 'mates'.
