Tank mates for goldies?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been thinking about it, and am exploring a few options LOL, but just curious if I did this tank as a species only goldy tank, how many goldies would you guys suggest? You guys seem to push the stocking limits much more then anyone else...

3 would be ok if you have really good filtration and monitor your water parameters.
Goldfish put off so much waste compared to other fish you can't really stock them at the level that you see us stocking other fish on here.
A lot of us also do tons of water changes depending on how heavily stocked we are, so that has to be taken into account.

This I'm saying for 3 fully grown fancy goldfish, which should be 6 inches long or a bit more fully grown. The longer goldfish like comets and commons you can't fit any and they'll outcompete fancy goldfish for food anyway.

I know several people that keep a lot of big goldfish in large tanks and they run large pond filters, if that says anything. Big waste producers, don't go with more than you wanna do maintanance for or have the filtration for.

So right now you have one fancy goldfish and a few guppys in a 55gal tank, yes?

Generally speaking, most people advise 20gallons for the first fancy goldfish and 10gallons for every one after that, but this is just a rough guide. So if you stuck to fancy goldfish, you could have about 4 fancies maximum in there.

Fancy goldfish do best with other varieties of fancy goldfish, don't put non-fancy goldfish like comets and commons with fancy goldfish as they tend to end up picking on the fancy goldfish since they are faster and large growing etc.

Pearlscales, Oranda's, Ryukins, pom poms, demekins, eggfish and lionheads etc are all fancy varieties of goldfish which should make suitable tankmates for moore goldfish  .

Common plecos have been known to try and suck the slime coat off goldfish (particularly the slower moving fancy varieties of goldfish), while hillstream loaches are very specialised sub-tropical river habitat fish which are unlikely to thrive in an average goldfish tank.

So personally i would advise either sticking to just the fancy goldfish, or getting a dojo loach to keep them company depending on what type of substrate you have in the tank;

`Right now theres 3, but two are leaving this weekend for their pond, so yeah one extremely stunted goldy LOL, I've had Onyx for a year and he hasn't grown at all, well he;s gotten chubby, but hasn't grown in length. Since he doesn't exactly count for much bioload (he's less then an inch long) can I add 4 more fancies? I have in problem is the guy is eaten LOL. When their small, would be okay to have more? I've got a large pond outside, as well as a few empty ponds that they can be moved to as they grow bigger.

I'm fully aware of how big even fancies can get, recently moved my two spesh fancies to a new pond, since their the size of two baseballs now, and had fast outgrown their 50g pond. I'm definitely avoiding the single tail ones LOL, if they get bigger then my two fancies did, I don't think I could build a pond big enough LOL.

LOL I give up, their are so many different things I'd like to do with my 4 foot tank LOL.

So far the ideas include
1. goldfish community, maybe a few corydoras to eat and bits and pieces the goldfish don't get
2. use it to grow out a BGK
3. Make an axolotl tank, from what I've read a 4 footer can house 6-8 axolotls, and they'd be an interesting stocking
4. make it a terrarium with some sort of ground dwelling critter, my hermit crabs'd love it, I have a class 3 reptile licence, so can keep pretty much whatever I want
5. Keep some mud crabs, those guys are always cool.

LOL I give up

I say go with whatever interests you most.

Yeah I don't see why you can't keep 4 other goldies if you have a pond to move them too if they grow too big and messy.

If you want to grow out a ghost knife the temperature will have to be 76F degrees or higher (24C) so you'd probably wanna put your goldfish somewhere else.

Yah, the goldies can always move to a pond, and I've managed to one u sace in another tank for my wee stunted one.

Hehe, I have no idea what I wanna do, goldies or BGK or the most painfree way to go, but the other ideas are very temppppting.

Ram cichlids? Butterfly fish? Dwarf gourami? Tetra (Lol).
They'd all do great together. Butterfly fish are not the easiest to feed though.

get a sister i'm sure u can keep her in a 55 i keep mine in my 10 gallon. i have three.
