Tank mates for rtg

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
grow out or separate the ornate till abt 10-12" then you can comm them no problem
catfishes, loaches, polyps , gar, datz, blood parrot , pbass , even discus are good tankmate for arowana as long as you watch the tankmate size.
Cheers bro.. I will grow out the ornate in a separate tank first. They are much easier to keep as well because they will act as the clean up crew in the bottom of the tank;)

Bass are always an option ive never had much luck with them either mate :( there not tuff enough for jardini tankmates big mouth no bite lol

Yeah pbass are sensitive sometimes, but i really like the different varieties. I have decided to go for a severum and a bottom dweller like polypterus. Lets see what happens hopefully i will get a peaceful rtg;). I f not I can move the severum to a different tank

Worth a try mate you could get lucky , I still think the sev will be in trouble at some point ;):D

Maybe I will get the parrot fish because it works for everyone. Gars I like but they are pretty hard to feed and some only prefer live food. Anyways it will be limited to a spotted or florida. Dats haven't worked for me as my previous two were harassing my arowanas.

Any cichlid that will stick up for itself is a gamble mate and could end up smashing your aro and one that doesn't is a dead one thats the main problem ive found with aros and cichlids (btf im taking jardini but rtg dont mess around either)
I'd love a get a gar but they're not jardini proof untill about 15"+ even with the armour scales they still get folded in two :(
I've only ever tried one dat and it got nailed , similar problem with these big one will harass your aro and small one will either stay black and hide or get nailed (they grow to slow compared to aros to) but loads of people manage these combos so its just down to the individual fish and giving it a go mate , like me you'll either end up rehoming fish , trading them or just loosing them to the gamble :(

Hey guys!!!
I will be getting a rtg next week around 8 inches. Yesterday at my lfs there were some gold severums around 4-5inches. I was thinking of adding one of them. I have no exprience in keeping severums, although I have kept a few arowanas before. Will the severum get aggressive and attack the aro?
Any other colorful suggestions for my arowana? I would like to only keep around 2-3 tankmates with my arowana. It is much easier to manage my tank when it is understocked

I haven't kept severums with Asian aros before, but a post I came across on another forum yesterday shows it is doable: http://www.arowanaclub.ca/forums/showthread.php?p=49050#post49050

In the end it could come down to how aggressive your particular aro is and also whether you have other "dither" fish to distract it from picking on your severums (i.e. rays, dats, birchirs, etc.). Silver dollars are another possibility to think about. My personal favourite would be a flagtail http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/semaprochilodus-insignis/

Yeah I rather play it safe for now and get a bichir. Dats are another choice but for it to work I would get my rtg to abt 12'' and get a 6- 7'' dat. About 2 years back I lost a 7'' silver to a 3'' dat:(.

Thanks bro!! Those sevs are really nice. Silver dollars could work but i heard they destroy plants. Flag tail is a good choice but I think they suck the slimecoat from fish
