Ok thanks for the tip on the Arowana but the issue with the common bichir tankmates is that my petstores generally keep small ones which are nice little snacks.

african knives are pretty cool or you can go with some african butterfly fish or some hatchetfish if they get large enough
If there are a few of them they will spend a fair amount of time cruising through the tank. Especially once they get accustomed. There are several other species as well.
I'll look in to see if my LFS can order Needle Noses, but I heard they're a poor choice of a gar since their so fragile.
Know of any other gars that have slow growth rates?
I really do enjoy African Knifes! Are they active? Do they enjoy pairs or no? Growth rate?
P.S. those Butterfly Fish scare the hell out of me
My LFS has so many color varations it gives me a headache sometimes XD
but if I can't find a exotic mate for my tank I'll most likely get some!
see hujeta gars can be hard to find but are very robust and hardy.ps Needle nose gars can be delicate at first but once acclimated into the aquarium they are just fun neat fish. also look into killi fish if you want some color an movement. :]
