Killes will eventually end up as bichir food. It's inevitable. And depending on the species you get, that could be a very expensive meal.

Many types of cichlid including Angelfish and Severums
Silver dollars or Red hooks
Tinfoil barbs
Many catfishes including striped raphael catfish and some synodontis
native "panfishes" (Centrarchidae) such as warmouth and longear sunfish

Knifefishes, gouramis, and gar were mentioned already.

You really have a lot of options. I'm sure I missed some!

I think I'm going to look into getting a gar first, if that's not a option I'm gonna go with the Gouramis and Congo Tetras.
Any chance you could have a knifefish with gouramis and a tetra?

I do have my knife with some gouramis, the knive mostly just ducks in and out of my hides keeping to the shadows while the gouramis stay out in open water.

I'll post some pics of the tank once I get either my gar or a combo of a Knifefish, Congo Tetras, and some Gouramis.

You said in your original post that a tank upgrade was not happening anytime soon. That should automatically take any gar out of the picture.
