Tank re-seal advice.

Ha. You are all wrong. You don't want to use a silicone sealant! You want to use a silicone adhesive. The aquarium manufacturers use GE Momentive.

GE 2 has anti mildew and other chemicals in it that are harmful to fish. I've had the white slime too just vacuum it off when you do water changes after a while it will go away

I think the amount you use in a typical resealing is relatively low, HOWEVER I had major problems (as did JK47) with GE II for a 3D background install.

What's the difference. I've used GE 1 to reseal a number of tanks ranging from 15 up to 210 never once had an issue (knock on wood) I know the pro use silicone adhesive but in reality it's not much different. If I did have a problem it's cause of a mistake I made sealing the tank. The job is only as good as you can do it.

We're talking about resealing not a total overhaul. Many hobbyist have used silicone sealants for decades with no issues.

I agree with the above poster. GE silicon II has additives in there. You don't want the one with bioseal. You will slowly poison your fish if you use the ones with bio seal. You want the use GE 1 for windows/doors/basements/attics. It should say 100% silicone. Also I'm pretty sure GE Silicon II cures with ammonia, while GE Silicon 1 cures with acetic acid (vinegar smell). I'm not sure on that since I haven't used the Silicon II

I just finnished a reseal on my old 100 gallon tank. I uses GE 1 and let it cure 48 hours. And so far so good! On a big tank I found out that the smell from the silicone is pretty strong. Good luck

Why scrimp on elmers glue when you can use epoxy. Pretty simple if you ask me. GE 1 is fine if you are just running a bead over the old seams. Why do you think they use this stuff when they build a tank?

I did say I know it's the stuff the stuff that pros use to manufacture tanks. But we are not talking about completely taking the apart pane by pane.
