they will be fine in a 55 for 2 years at least. you dont need a 180g for a 2" fish just because it can potentially grow to 30". tank size is relative to the size if the fish

is this with 0 waterchanges in 2 years? Festae grow slower, but not that slow!

Your going to get answers that vary of course, bc there is always exceptions to the rule. For example, I heard of people breeding angels in 10 gallons...Anyhow, personally I saw you could pull it in a 90. Festae are all different from my expierence in terms of agression. Two of my friends have festae that tolerate no tankmates, mates, or anything even when they were small, where as I have 11 juvies in a 55 that I'm still growing out (got them as fry, all varying in size now, one is now about 5") and I have never had any problems for over 9 months now, in fact they school together for the most part. If this continues I am going to move them into the 220, but I'm obviously expecting a turn for the worse when they get larger, and have to sell off most of them, but for now even I find it somewhat surprising.

you can keep fish up to 10" in a 55. as long as the tank is wider then the fish is long, theyll be fine, but you will need to upgrade eventually. im so sick of people saying you need a 125g for a single fish that will EVENTUALLY grow to 16"+.

TANK SIZE IS REALITIVE. if you have a 3" great white shark. you can keep it in a 10g tank untill it grows out. you dont need a 700,000,000g tank for it at 3". (not to be taken literally, but i hope at least a few people will get the concept)

minimum tank size requirements are set for FULL GROWN FISH, so, unless your fish is full grown, the numbers dont apply to you.

I know this, my point was that a festae should be over 10" in 2 years and it's not right to keep even a 10" fish divided in a 55gallon IMO. The problem is knowing when to upgrade. If you're going to upgrade your fish to a larger tank some day, why not just have them in that tank to begin with. They'll grow faster in a larger tank anyways.

Tank size is not only relative to the size of a fish, but the activity of that fish. a fish may not be the width of the tank, but if it's extremely active it's very different than fish like bottom dwellers and such.

As to your example- Sharks happen to be open water swimmers and will sink if they stop swimming (lack of swim bladder), i also think they are born bigger than 3".

The reason most people (at least me) add that you should keep it in a tank for adult size, is because many members that come here don't have the tank size to accomidate the adult fish. Kind of a reasurrance policy for myself.

agreed why buy a small tank for a small fish that will get big when you can just get the big tank first. and also i believe you should be able to accommodate a fish at full grown size before you buy it. you never know when your gonna hit some financial difficulties and be stuck with a big fish in a small tank.... its like buying a dog. if you dont have enough room for it why get it?

thanks for all the great info, now to make my wife happy so as i can spend $110 on a pair of festea
$110 is pretty steep but think about how much the tank cost you and how long you will have these fish for. On another note, you can probably get them cheaper than that. Wild or not that's too much money for those 2 fish. Try another big name supplier other than Rapps. I know all the guys down in Florida are cleaning out their ponds right now. Try Ken Davis @ fishfarm in Georgia.
