Home Depot has some stone carpets too, could put a carpet under the tank to give it the rock look.

Krylon Fusion has some great faux finishes. Unfortunately, they recommended that I NOT use their product inside my tank. Painting the outside of the floor would not have concealed the floor joint, and with 1 1/2" acrylic, not much of anything would show through from the outside. The only way Krylon Fusion would have worked, was if I got thinner acrylic, painted it, and placed it painted side down on the floor...and I still would have had to deal with a lot of tile seams. Believe me, I agonized through all my options for about two years.

A 3d background on the floor essentially? genius.......

now that is an awesome idea. I don't think I've ever seen any else do that. LIGHTBULB!!!

A 3D background on the floor is exactly what it is. Don't know anyone else who has done it either. Maybe it will be the start of a trend :):)

Because it is low profile, it is flexible and came in a roll that we can just unroll in the tank. Unfortunately, I was not able to get in the tank and get accurate measurements of the floor, so I ordered the outside dimensions less 1".... we probably still have to cut 1 1/2" off the background before installing it. Being 15' in length, it is still heavy, and will take two people to install it.

It only took Universal Rocks three days to fabricate this custom background.

Until Mastiffman recommended Universal Rocks, I could not find anyone who could make a 15' x 4' background for me. Thank you Mastiffman for a great recommendation!

Brilliant!

Will you have to glue it down, or does it sink (most 3D backgrounds float)?

I was told that the weight of the water will keep it down. It's not the traditional Styrofoam background material. It reminds me of roofing stuff.

I've done it before.

Worked great if it was only the 3d pieces, and you silicone them down so nothing gets under them, and they don't float away. Worked just like a bare bottom tank. Super easy maintenence.

I then tried putting sand in the tank with the 3d background bottom (thought it would look awesome, and it did).....That was the worst idea ever. The sand got in between the pieces, and I couldn't get to the detritus inbetween. Worst thing ever.

I then sold the tank.

Only pic I have is with the sand. Super easy maintenence until I did that. As you can see, I have a water circulator at the bottom to kick up the detritus, and it worked pretty darn well (until I added the sand). I'll probably do the 3d bottom again one day (only without the sand).

Very nice! Keep us updated on how the 3D rug works out:)

that is actually a really cool idea. i would also add sand tho lol.

If I wanted sand, I would just put sand in and be done with it. It seems like a stupid idea to have a custom background made and then cover it up with sand. I would gain nothing and would be out a lot of money and time.
