Tank Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
as long as your getting enough surface current bringing in O2 then no you dont need an air pump, but if the fish start to stay towards the top with the faces pointed towards the surface then you dont have enough O2 and need to add an air pump right away

IMO I would definitley add an air stone. More O2 and adding surface agitation couldnt hurt. Cichlids, Oscars especially, can ruin your live plants. Though I keep putting them in there anyway.... Make sure you do your research... READ READ AND READ SOME MORE about your fish and others. I noticed you said you have most of your decor already but not the tank. Make sure you cycle the tank before adding your juvenile fish.. Good luck!

I own a 50 gallon tank already, that one will go away. All the water will go in my new 125 gallon tank, also the used filter material from old tank will go in the new tank. According to my fish store this should be sufficient to add the fish immediatly.

Im doing research, and i decided to put maybe 1 or 2 plants in it, but nothing more. Ill get an air stone then, to make sure there will be enough air for the fish.

Thx for ur help guys.

depends on what kind of biolaod the filter in your 50g is capable of holding, the water doesnt really hold that much BB, youd be better off transferring the substrate as well if you can. but yeah i would heavily feed your 50g to build up the bacteria until you get the new fish so when you suddenly add the 3 new fish your filter will be able to handle it

Well the substrate cant be taken in the new tank.

Will my 3 small fish make a big mess even when they are not full grown?
If so, I better wait 2 weeks?

The problem is, I told the fish store I was getting the JD monday or tuesday, because they only had 3 left, the shopkeeper said he would keep me 1 if i payed 5EURO already.
So I might have to put the JD in right away, but the other 2 can wait.

ok yeah just do the filter from the old tank and feed the old tank realy heavily until you go to get the JD to jumpstart some extra bacteria, what is in the old tank right now? if they are similar size, etc of the fish you are putting in the new tank then the filter media should be able to handle their waste just fine, you will probably have a mini-cycle but nothing to worry about just keep an eye on it and if you get an ammonia spike thats too high then do a water change right away

Well it was a 50 gallon Malawi tank. So there should be alot of bacteria in the water and filter.

oh ok but is it empty now? if its been empty for awhile and you didnt feed the tank then they will have died, they need food just as the fish do

Pleco is still in there, and im feeding him some mussels.
The Malawis are out of the tank 2 days now, sold them all to smn I found on the internet.

Tomorrow ill be getting my JD and tell the shop to keep me 1 oscar and 1 GT untill i have my new tank. JD will go in 50 gallon till new tank arrives.

You could do one of each however, oscars are not that aggressive and may get bullied by the GT and JD. If it were me I would go with one oscar and one EBJD (not as aggressive).
