Tank size & dimentions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Height and width is what determine glass thickness and bracing thus a tall ass tank like that will be much more cheddar.

I agree 3 feet is NOT necessary. Length and width is more important to piranhas rather then height. And 17 piranhas need a 280-300gal and crazy filtration. Not to mention a tank and shoal that size is a load of commitment for years and years....

8'Lx2'Wx2'T is fine.

3ft tall, really? Non of mine have ever went past mid way in my tank and it's a good 20 inch. Even with deco up top to hide in and even with live foods that are up on the top level of the tank. They never go up there and take a half hour to work up the courage to go up there. 3 feet wide is alittle much don't you think since that max out at a foot, 2 is just fine. And only 7 in a tank that big, you should know that they won't be aggressive. I've had 7 in a 125 and they didn't even use half the tank and it took them some time to find their food. A tank that big could house over 20 I would say and still have room. I think your exaggerating a bit. Trying to sound pro isn't going to help him.

when u have 7 Ps, 2 ft height is ok. but he's going to have 20 Ps.
Didn't you watch any piranha videos in aquariums where there are lot of Ps ?
when the shoal is big, they love to swim in different water levels.
2 ft width and height not enough for adult 20 Ps.

Don't be silly. I said the tank dimensions what I think Ps need. And what I gave my Ps.
I don't wanna sound pro here.

Theirs a big difference between home aquariums an zoos and local aquariums that are thousands of gallons. As we'll as keeping 20 and keeping hundreds of thousands in one area. So your saying that you have a tank that size for your reds? Or are you one of those guys that has a rtc in a 55 and then rips on everyone on their tanks? I thought piranhas are hard to com by in Russia.

I have 5 Ps in 120g tank 4*2*2. for them that tank is enough.
But for 20 Ps, I don't think width 2 and height 2 will be enough with the length somewhere 6-8 ft

2ft width 100% is a no go for 20 Ps.
height also I believe more than 2 will be better.

but with the height, price goes high, so only option is make the height 2 in that case. But 3ft height is always better for 20 Ps..
8*2*2 is not enough for life.....
I think 8ft long tank should have 3ft height to make it look good as well.

The facts that your supporting and with what you have now dosent add up your "facts" that your saying would mean you would need a larger tank just for your 5 you have. I think 5 is fine in your tank but your telling others other wise. My opinion 5 is fine in your tank but if your going to tell other all this, then you should at-least go by what your saying. I'm trying to help with my experience of keeping reds from the past almost 7 years, everything that I've said isent blown out of proportion like what you have said. But the one who posited this can do what ever he wants, personally with piranhas, over stocking a piranha or two so the best way to go. I'm done and I've said what I needed to, I'm not going to argue with some yahoo that thinks he knows more than others, this isent Facebook.

+1

Look at where piranhas come from -The*Amazon*basin-The*Orinoco-Rivers of the*Guianas-The*Paraguay-Paraná, and the*São Francisco River*systems-Where in most places its very shallow, and during the dry season the water level drops drastically, some piranhas survive in small pools of water thats very shallow and some literally dry out and die.

Research and experience will tell you DEPTH & LENGTH are much more important then height in aquaria!

Glad to hear you finally upgraded to an appropriate tank for your fish but that doesnt make you a 'know it all' and if you ask other members opinions DONT argue them, especially members that have decades of FK experience!

BTW if you want a TALL long and wide tank thats affordable why not research 'plywood tank builds' and build your own footpeint! If you do it right you will save a ton of cash or why not look at an above ground pool like an Intex brand, then use your 120 gal for fry and make some $$!

aaa
what you say is for 20 Ps, 8*2*2 is ok ?
very experienced person ))) LOL

If you dont wanna argue, why did you go to some other threads and talked about this ? ))))
I said i gave enough room from my Ps. for 20 Ps of course my tank is not enough. You cant even understand that after 7 years of Piranha keeping.
I'm telling need to give them enough room, so 8*2*2 not enough at all for 20 reds. If someone say 8*2*2 enough for 20 reds, it's a JOKE ))))
I have a friend who has Piranas for 16 years and they are 16 years old. 20g is the minimum for an adult piranha, But more is better.
8*2*2 tank doesn't fulfill the requirement at all for 20 Ps.
No offense, but you are wrong about this.

As he wants 8ft length for his new tank, other dimensions should be width 3, height 2 (minimum)

Yes, where they naturally live the height of water is not much SOMETIMES (you can't tell always not much because I have seen many places where piranhas live in deep waters), and they also live there less than 10 years (in their natural habitats).
But in aquarium they can live up to 30 years in prime conditions.

some of the information available on internet about Ps are wrong.

A 6x3x3 is only 40-50gals larger then a
8x2x2......

Point is shoals over 10 or so can be housed in decent sized tanks and be fine, as long as minimum requirements are meant the 20gal per fish rule doesnt exactly apply. Thats saying you can only put 25 rbp in a 500gallon tank or 50 rbp in a 1000gallon tank which is false.

Ive seen zoo and educational centers with much more piranhas and pacus per gallon because the basic large footprint is there.

BTW try not to talk down to a senior member who has contributed a ton to this site and is very informed and educated in the hobby. That just makes you look arorgant, just like all your 'black piranha' hate threads!

If you start a thread/ask a question be prepared for ANSWERS/OPINIONS
